Dual Exhaust Conversion questions

3pt1lumina

Recommended Posts

Okay I am now seriously thinking about this for my Lumina. I found this on ebay at, what I think is a very decent price.

So first off, what is involved with this conversion, and... this link I post below, is this going to give me all the parts I need and a decent "grumble" of a sound?

Or if not, what would you all recommend. I did a search but it didn't work for me.

Thanks all 8)

Like, true dual, or 3.4L pseudo-dual?

you didn't look at the link  it's fake duals.

it looks nice. i can't tell if that is crush bent or mandrel bent pipe though. and what mufflers do they come with? the description says "Dynomax" but the picture shows a Thrush muffler box. are they straight-through mufflers or chambered?

btw. i can't really comment on what it might sound like since i am turbocharged but.....IMO i think fake duals are for looks only. i would definately consider a resonator and hi-flo cat if you're worried about raspiness.

i'm not going to bother converting to fake duals with my Cutlass. just one 3" pipe (or even 2.5") will be more than enough for me...all mandrel bent from turbine to tip with one straight-through Dynomax Ultraflo muffler and no cat/no resonator of course :) the turbine takes care of all raspiness for me.

Dynomax makes Thrush mufflers.

And it looks mandrel bent to me. Only thing is that I dont see any hangers on the mufflers so it might hang down too low/move around unless you find put some hangers on yourself.

Otherwise, installation is measure, cut, and weld. :)

I definitely want to do a hi-flow cat, but can't afford it until next spring. I just happened to come across this. Would you guys wait or just do this now and then the cat next spring?

*ponders on having a bidding war with Dave*

naw...those mufflers are pretty good, we've got em on our Monte Carlo. not hideously loud, but its got a nice tone to it...

When I first saw the pipes, I thought "damn, I'd hit that!" but then I saw the price  . I would imagine you could take it to a muffler shop and have them fab and install a complete cat-back dual setup for close to that price...

I've priced it around here. Unfortunately, it's between $350-500 around here... including parts and labor. I think that is ridiculous.

What about if I went to someplace like Advance or something and see if they have a Y pipe. That's all I really need.

Fuck that! I guess you gotta have "connections" to get an exhaust done on the cheap (at least I think my stepdad, due to his MuscleCar club membership, gets deals on any exhaust work he has done.)

If you're looking for just the "Y" pipe, scour the boneyards for Z34's, GTP's, and Cuttys that had the 3.4  . Chances are the pipe will be stainless to boot...

In my experience, most junkyards wont sell exhaust parts, as it is illegal in most states. ( emissions reasons )...

You should be able to find a Y pipe at either an autoparts store, or a tractor supply store. I found mine at the latter.

You can get 2 Flomaster 40 series and a high flow cat on ebay for $150, and then get the dual setup for $50 at a yard. And all you have to do is have a shop weld it up.

I just went to Advance and did some pricing for exhaust on a 92 Z34. (not that I have that, but so they didn't get confused) For around $295 I can get everything from the cat back.

So I need to make a decision by 1am... ebay or Advance? All the parts from Advance are Walker products... oh minus the actually mufflers... That's just for the piping.

IMO ebay is the way to go. Opinions please??

JY's wont sell them around here either

So it's $295 w/o the mufflers? Sounds like alot to me.

Yeah I agree. I think what I am going to do is forget about it for now, and once the car is back on the road in the spring, go to someplace like Monro-Muffler or Cole or something and see if they'll cut me a deal of some sort. Another option I may have is a family friend who does custom exhaust on muscle cars.. he's sort of expensive I think though.

For all of you that have done this type of conversion, what did you use? what did it cost? and where did you have it done?

Is the $295 pipe stainless steel? If it's "Aluminized" pipe, then it damn well shouldn't cost that much!

Yes it is stainless steel. But it doesn't come with the mufflers and it's not installed. Why are these prices so crazy? I mean, for my Chevelle from the manifolds back, TRUE dual exhaust with mufflers was going to be $400 installed. That makes sense, not a freakin Y pipe and then 2 mufflers.

Stainless pipe is much more expensive than the "aluminized" pipe. But then again, a stainless system will last the life of the car, whereas (if you live in the rust belt) the aluminized stuff will rot out and need replacing every 3-5 years...
