Helmholtz or Glasspack Resonator

Recommended Posts

I need a resonator and i am wondering which one will get rid of the exhaust drone inside better. I am thinking a helmholtz might quiet it down more. i know how both work, so glasspack seems like it would be louder. Youropinions?

Get a real resonator instead of a glasspack and it will be quieter. You can find cheap universal stainless steel ones on ebay.

and i have also heard that they only work at certain rpms? I want all possible info please. I don't care if it isn't loud enough.

It won't "only work at certain rpms." A resonator will quieten down the exhaust some and take away any raspiness & droning that you would get on a setup with no resonator. Resonators will change the tone of the exhaust note somewhat(in a good way, they actually deepen up the sound). I only have a high-flow cat and one resonator on my '90 TGP(no mufflers). It's idles pretty loud, but is fairly quiet under acceleration when it has a nice low burble to it. When accelerating at wide open throttle, the exhaust is barely audible on my car. I can email you a small clip of the TGP's exhaust if you want to hear it. By the way, what mufflers and all are you planning on going with? I'll be able to get a clip of a flowmaster(30series) + resonator combo on a 3.1 here soon since I'm adding a resonator to my '93 GP's setup.

oh i have dual magnaflows. it is kinda loud inside and for some reason has a somewhat distorted sound unless you've driven like 60 miles. Almost like a fartcan, its very strange, and i know mags are not associated to that sound. oh I would like that clip too! At aROUND 2100-2700 rpms my whole car seems to resonate and the sound of the exhaust is not even heard, just loudness

BTW, it is the 3.1 MPFI V6 if thats needed

ALSO, is a 12" resonator good enough for reducing massive drone?

I would imagine that a 12'' resonator should eliminate your drone, but you can always go with one a bit longer if you're scared that one of the short ones might not completely do away with the droning. I believe the one on my TGP is one of the 12'' versions for what it's worth.

What's your email addy so I can send the vid? It's about 1.5mb in size so it shouldn't take long to download. The car sounds a lot better than it does on the recording, I've been meaning to get some better clips of the car and I'll post those on the board when I do.

comparing (or modding) a NA 3.1 to a Turbo 3.1 exhaust is apples and oranges.

They still have the same type tone though, the NA is of course going to be more raspy and a lot louder even with the same catback setup.

wow yout TGP has a great sound! i wish i could get mine to be that smooth. maybe the resonator will do it?

Thanks. 8) I'm sure it will make your exhaust sound a lot better. I've heard various setups on a variety of cars before and after adding resonators, and afterwards, they always sounded better.

really? now is that with a helmholtz or a glasspack?

Helmholtz/a real resonator. The difference between a Helmholtz resonator and a glasspack is that the helmholtz resonator cancels sound on certain frequencies via reflection(bouncing sound waves off one another so that that cancel each other out) whereas glasspack mufflers contain fiberglass packing that is supposed to absorb sound.
