TheGreenMachine Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 Okay guys i am officially done with the slowness of my car. i own a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix SE with a 3.1 V6. I need to start modding it. BAD. okay pretty much everything has to be made custom i believe thats why im coming to you guys. O yeah before i forget im going turbo even if i have to go full custom. so what parts would be the best for a mild set up. like what kind of turbo etc.. and another question they do sell a cam for a 3.1 v6 but it always says with distributer does this mean i cant use it because i have DIS. i hope you guys can help me out and all your help is deeply appreciated. o yeah and happy holidays to all. -andrew Quote

Bossman429 Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 The TGPs and TSTEs had a T28 turbo, if you want to have some fun go with a T3 based turbo. I don't know a ton about turbo tech though, there is a whole science to picking a proper turbo for your application that I can't even get into. Crane Cams makes a couple cams for the 3.1, as well as a few more companies I made a spreadsheet listing all of them with specs but am too lazy to open it up Yeah you shouldn't get a distributor with a 3.1 cam, should just include a cam and lifters. Crane has theirs in a compucam kit with those included I believe. dktk2 on this board might be some help to you as he has a cam and 3100 top end on his Turbo STE. Good luck Quote
Prospeeder Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 The TGPs and TSTEs had a T28 turbo Ahem, T25 Quote
TheGreenMachine Posted December 24, 2005 Author Report Posted December 24, 2005 thanx guys so that kit will fit i just got to get the ports ported to the right shape Quote
Bossman429 Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pontiac-Grand-Prix-3-1-v6-MacLaren-Turbo-Kit_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQitemZ8024588245QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Thad be easy right there, computer tuning would be somthing for you, and the Exhaust manifold would have to be ported in a D shape like the 3100s, youd still need a new oil pan or mod yours for the drain lines, and coolant lines, and oil lines to it, its alot of work Seems to me that he wouldn't really be able to use most of that TGP stuff. That's kinda pricey too. THe manifolds are usable, with the afformentioned porting. The turbo is usable, but you'll have to get a custom crossover made for the 3100, so you might as well go with a T3 flange for all the trouble, unless you go with the GT28 Ball bearing turbo. filter, pipes, brackets, upper intake manifold, downpipe, and throttle body are all going to waste if straping onto a 3100. TheGreenMachine Posted December 24, 2005 Author Report Posted December 24, 2005 and dude what i meant by with distributer was that i think it means that you need a distributer to make it work you know Quote
Prospeeder Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 Yea, you Do need a few things, like an Oil return line, and a place for it to go to your oil pan, A chip, i think that set comes with the nessesary coolants lines, but you might as well make your own anyway, but im not an expert, i just have a turbo car and know how it works and what is what Bossmans right tho, alot of wasted stuff u could just sell off anyway Quote
TheGreenMachine Posted December 24, 2005 Author Report Posted December 24, 2005 and is there anyway i can use the stock manifolds and just make a custom crossover to hole the gt28 Quote
Bossman429 Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 The TGPs and TSTEs had a T28 turbo Ahem, T25  Sorry, I must have been daydreaming. Quote
TheGreenMachine Posted December 24, 2005 Author Report Posted December 24, 2005 lol yeah i know what you mean what are some good chips that i can use and tune know of any good companys Quote
Prospeeder Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 i would love a GT28RS Double ball bearing turbo Quote
Bossman429 Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 and is there anyway i can use the stock manifolds and just make a custom crossover to hole the gt28 THat is really the only thing you CAN do. The manifolds are usable, and the crossover will have to be custom, as you probably understand by now. The GT28 is a T2 flange, so it will bolt in place of the TGP T25. Quote
TheGreenMachine Posted December 24, 2005 Author Report Posted December 24, 2005 sweet so i can weld one of those up and i got the turbo now i just need all the other shit lol so how about that chip Quote
Bossman429 Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 lol yeah i know what you meanwhat are some good chips that i can use and tune know of any good companys That will be tough as the 3100 uses a Flash ROM chip which is soldered to the PCM, and thus must be "reflashed" in order to reprogram. It's not like a good ol' OBD I system where you can just plug in a chip. Some one else might have to pipe in on that aspect. (Wow, look at my post count GROOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW) Quote
TheGreenMachine Posted December 24, 2005 Author Report Posted December 24, 2005 ha okay what about one of those jet perfomance modules will that do the job and on the cross over i would have to make a whole for the external wastegate because the gt28 is an externally watse gated turbo right Quote
gp90se Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 No a jet chip wont do it. if you want to stick a turbo on ya stock X-over, your going 2 need 2 block the downpipe passage from the rear manifold. Easyest way I can thing 2 do it is a TGP setup, OBD1 wiring/ecu, have a chip made up to use the tranny in your car (won't last long with the torque increase of a turbo) and run all the lines/hoses needed off the 3100. It is much easyer 2 swap in a 3.4 dohc motor, have a custom chip made up, run a 50 shot and enjoy a whole new powerplant. Quote
