Crazy K Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 I would say go with the cobalt. I think focuses are such horses assses. You should evaluate what they might give you for the car, and post it up to see if anyone is interested in beating the price (likely a $500 trade in.. Yuck).... or your cousin taking it back.... good luck either way. - Ken Quote
chadz34 Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 I would definately rather see it go to someone who would treat it right and do something with it instead of just letting it sit around or get stuck at a dealer, put on their lot, and set for some ridiculous price that will never sell. Unfortunately, I don't really have that choice. I can barely afford any of this as it is. I just put almost $40 worth of tranny fluid into this car today and spent like $13 on hose to do the fluid swap. I'm looking into a Cobalt or Focus because they're cheap little cars that will get good gas mileage and shouldn't be too bad with a 5-speed (I'm requiring a 5-speed). I'd like to go with a Cobalt because I'm (obviously) a huge fan of Chevy. That would break my heart seeing it sit at a dealership...Doesn't deserve that. All it needs is a new transmission. 8) Quote
BuickMan Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 brown and burnt smelling fluid means tranny is cooked. You can change the fluid to keep it going but the inevitable going to happen. The tranny is going to die while you are driving. Quote
dbtk2 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 If you transmission doesn't need it, NEVER use Lucas tranny fix. I've never seen a transmission use it, then last over 3 or 4k miles. Hmmm....thats not my experience with it. My dad bought his TGP with 103k on it and the trans was fucked. It would downshift very hard and slipped, etc... So we dropped the pan, changed the filter, and filled it with 4 bottles of lucas and I think it took 3 or 4 quarts of trans fluid along with that. The car has shifted perfectly since then and the trans seems to be in good shape, it now has 142k on it. I know at this point he said the trans seems okay, but a bottle of lucas can't hurt it. Its always worked great for everything I've put it in. Shawn Quote
Hairdo12 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 Come on man, since you recently changed the fluid a while back you probably just had a piece of sludge that broke free and got stuck in a vavle or something. You trade that thing in you'll get what 1500 for it? I say dump some tranny detergent in there, flush the fluid and put a new filter in and you will have a strong tranny for 50k + more miles. I get the impression that car was loved throughout its life so I doubt the tranny was beat on. I think its worth a shot beceause if you fail, you are out like 120 bucks... if you succeed you are up 170 a month for possibly the next 5 years. Quote
White93z34 Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 lets do abit of math lets use my car for example: 1993 Lumina Z34, 98,800 miles, $2500 anything with a star beside of it, i did not NEED to do. alternator: $70 Spark plug wires: $50 *intake gaskets: $30 *thermostat:$9 *fuel filter $7 IAC: $25 *transmission filter and fluid change $50 front brakes $46 rear brakes $280 (in 3-4 changes) *battery $80 spark plugs $10 MISC: $200 total: $857 so overall $428 per year average on general upkeep, which is offset by how many times it took me to get the back brakes right, thats all the more its cost me to maintain my car for 2 years now, not counting my wreck. and today it has 144,500 on it. and i might add alot of that was not a necessity to do, however i did it out of the spirit to maintain my car. so that vs. the $2000+ you could make in a year on carpayments, plus higher insurance. warranty is nice, however i perfer my "car payment" to be in the form of parts, that i buy once. so even if you were to spend $1500 on a trans rebuild its not as much as a car payment would be for a year. well, "the cars not worth it" true. but its not like your going to make ANY money on a brand new car anyhow, you loose money on cars, the end. gp90se Posted December 31, 2005 Report Posted December 31, 2005 I swear by the lucas stuff, bought my blazer with 137k on it, tranny shifted hard and didnt go into gear till it was warm. didn't change the fluid, didnt change the filter, just took 2 quarts out, put in a bottle of lucas and topped it off with fluid, im at 160k without issue now. and Quote
