Prospeeder Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 WHat causes the common Ripping, cracks, and wearing off of leather in our cars? Just the fact people dont recondition them? Or hot hot hot weather? I want my leather to last, i once a month recondtion them with megires leather care Quote
LukeZ34 Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 Sunlight dries it out, and tears, rips and cracks all come from the heat and extreme cold that it's been subjected to for 15+ years now. Skin oils, and normal wear and tear from daily usage also plays a big part in how long they last. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 GM leather typically isn't the best quality to begin with........... Quote
Crazy K Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 I read that the cadillac seats last alot longer because they are all leather, where as ours our vinyl, with leather only on the contact area. And it causes uneven tension, probably due to shrinkage. I also think the plusher the seats, like the caddys, the less stress they suffer from use and skrinkage, as they have more give before they actually start to stretch. But I noticed in a GP (the type with the DIC and bench rear seats, say my first one in person lst week) that the thigh contact areas of the lower seat are split and have cloth insets(like a cloth canyon in a plain of leather)allowing them to flex seperately of each other. Really well thought out! Quote
Prospeeder Posted December 15, 2005 Author Report Posted December 15, 2005 yea, i was thinking they were like, vynal or somthing with leather over them, cause on a part the leather is worn down to some vynal like stuff Quote
Dirty Rockstar Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 My drivers seat needs to be refinished-Give the leather it's "Sheen" back to it.. It is like it cracked and went to bare gray lookin material.. Pissed me off too.. Quote
Crazy K Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 My 95 CS seats I bought for an interior swap had torn up lower drivers seat upholstery. I snatched the entire leather upholstery panel form another CS, from the passenger side. It is identical EXCEPT that the holes for the switches and seat lever have to be added to the Drivers side of the panel and the hole(s) on the right side of the panel have to be sewn up. Don't laugh, but I actually cut apart the stitching on the original upholstery panel, and removing the good patches from the left side of the donor panel(it's right side was ruined) and sewed them in to substitute for both left side vinyl panels and the rearward leather corner piece. I can sew. It looks so good no one can see it even when I point at the seat and say "where did I sew?" Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted December 15, 2005 Report Posted December 15, 2005 FAT ASS That was the first thing that came to mind when I read that subject. I think the damage is mostly caused by UV, but the pulling and tugging of a fat ass on the seat doesn't help. Quote
Prospeeder Posted December 15, 2005 Author Report Posted December 15, 2005 damn, my best friend is fat, lol Quote
1990lumina Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 Friction against the left side bolster when getting in and out (I find most common flaw)...and the UVs dry the leather out so the friction just cracks it. I put on that Meg's shit in my mom's car...wow, that shit works great! Quote
Dirty Rockstar Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 Hmmm.. I suppose after the cracking it is too late for recondition? What then? Refinish the leather surface? Quote
Prospeeder Posted December 18, 2005 Author Report Posted December 18, 2005 mione have no rips, cracks or noting, just some ageing lines, but iv been reconditioning them often and the lines are going away Quote
