89BuickRegalGS
if my solinoid wasn't working properly, could it cause it to keep making contact with the fly wheel thus making the tapping sound I was hearing form my engine? DOHCRagtopguy
The solenoid merely energizes the circuit that drives the gear out into making contact with the flywheel teeth. It is possible that the solenoid could be bad. I think the way you could check would be to drop the starter and get a couple jumper cables, hook the negative to metal ground on starter, touch the positive to the hot lead on the circuit. When you touch it, the gear should jump out and spin and not retract until you remove the juice to the positive terminal. If the solenoid is shorted, this will not happen, nothing will happen because the circuit would remain open. If the drive is shot, it may spin, but not jump out to engage the flywheel when energized. Of course, you connect the other ends of the jumper cables to the respective battery terminals. Good luck.
Robby1870
Personally, I suggest to change both the solenoid and the starter at the same time. Because, you may change just the solenoind, and next week the starter itself go out, and then you got to take the whole thing out again. Plus to get to the solenoid, that is on top of the starter, you got to take the starter out anyway, so you migh as well change it, if it has a lot of miles (or starts) on it. Thats just my opinion, though. Robby
