92chevyeuro Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 Well, now that its getting colder out, my trans is starting to act up again. Its seems every winter when it gets cold out the trans doesnt want to shift into 1st when i come to a stop. It was doing this last winter, but when summer came, it worked perfect. Now that its getting colder out, its doing it again. Anyone know why it could be doing this? I am hoping its an easy fix. thanx. Quote
White93z34 Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 have you checked your fluid, a tranny thats low can do some crazy things in the cold weather. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 When was the last time you replaced the fluid and filter? Make sure thats full, and when the car is running just do a quick check to make sure your not loosing pressure from a line anywhere. Quote
92chevyeuro Posted December 4, 2005 Author Report Posted December 4, 2005 Im affraid to change the fluid and filter in it. It has 110,000 miles on it. I have heard from many people, if you change the fluid on a car with that many miles, the trans wont last much longer. Quote
JakeMetz63 Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 My i changed the fluid in my 95 cutlass at about 115k miles and it was still running strong at 150 k miles. Quote

Thats like saying of the engine has 200,000miles on it you cant change the oil and filter cuz it wont last. fresh oil and a fresh filter will not harm your tranny. Its designed to have the oil and filter replaced every 50,000miles. And sometimes more if your having trouble. Quote
92chevyeuro Posted December 4, 2005 Author Report Posted December 4, 2005 I have been told that by many mechanics. Quote
Hairdo12 Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 I have been told that by many mechanics. I don't know many mechanics who know their ass from their elbow. The only thing I've heard about changing fluid that has never been changed is the new fluid is loaded with fresh detergents and that will loosen up varnish buildups and clog some stuff up. I personally have never knew of anyone having this happen. My old boss from my part time job during college had a Grand Am with 170k miles on it and the tranny fluid was never changed. It was dark brown and smelled terrible. He got the fluid changed and it lasted 40k miles more till he wrapped it around a tree. Quote
GP1138 Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 It's all relative. If your tranny has been beaten on, it might be a good idea to leave it alone, but most of the time, even a simple pan drop and filter change can do wonders. Quote
