92LuminaRS
My car shakes at 80+ mph.... I'm thinking it's an imperperly balanced tire, but at anything above 80?? It has 4 new winter tires on it that dont seem to be wearing unevenly... I put roughly 300 miles on my car a day (I'm a mobile computer tech) and have just recently noticed this problem on highway cruising... The faster I go the more it shakes, what I've experianced with improperly balanced tires is a shaking around 40-50 and then it dosnt shake above that.... mabye I have a slightly bent driveaxle? IDK It just annoys me when I'm crusin' down the highway at like
pwmin
what is the speed rating of the tires? could be a front end suspension component has gone mal
DiscoStudd
You haven't put Stop Leak in any of the tires, have you? Regardless, getting the tires balanced would be the best place to start. Also check the rim(s) for any noticeable damage. It's possible one of the rims could be bent ever-so-slightly (enough to slip by a tire tech) and is causing an out-of-balance condition... J
shifted belt also might be the problem, shake down the front end before you go getting your tires balance checked
MonteCarloChick
Mine used to do that too. I needed an alignment but couldn't get that done before I fixed my tie rod
THe_DeTAiL3R
When I had my "summer" tires on (stock size on my stock crosslace) I had shaking above 70+mph and it got much worse the faster I went. Also it was pulling a bit to the left. I put on my "winter" wheels (205/70/15s) and the problem has seemed to go away. The tires are a bit smaller, but I have taken it up to 90mph (on the cluster, probably slower in real life due to tire size) to make sure. Those tires suck for high speeds though, feel like I'm going all over the place. :? In the spring I'm just gonna toss the old "summer" tires (all seasons) and buy 4 brand new SUMMER rubber so that I'm good for a long time. Crazy K
I have seen many bent metal rims (every other one, no joke) and just a few bent alloy rims (1 in 10 maybe) Try jacking up each of your tires and spin them and watch for an out of round rim both on the outside edge, and on the inside edge... Many have bent barrels and which would only be evident by watching the inside rim edge as it is rotated (one of the many pleasures of FWD)

Crazy K
You have to have the car in neutral(obviously), and a friend to spin while you watch makes it sooo much easier. - Ken
92LuminaRS
I rotated the tires recently and the shaking moved to the rear now so I'm thinking a bad balance of bent rim, I have to go get it checked out
Crazy K
do what i said, get a friend, raise the car, and have your friend spin the tires and watch for out or round, especially on the inner rim.
92LuminaRS
I'm definately going to have to as soon as it stops freakin' snowing, thanks for the advise. I'll have to talk my friend into letting me get her on the lift
Crazy K
i was talking about spinning by hand actually. quite easy, but easiest if a firns is spinning it by hand while you check the rim.
92LuminaRS
How else would I spin it? I would rather have it on a lift in a nice warm shop than on a jack in the 6" of snow and 24* weather 8)
Crazy K
I thought You'd be throwing it in gear on a lift, actually!!! LOL I had a friend control the throttle and put the car in park from 60 miles an hour with the car raised on my old buick when it's tranny died. It wouldn't go with the wheels on the ground. 92LuminaRS
OMG! Why?!?!?!
Crazy K
it was probably valvebody failure or clutch failure..... about 4 months (like 300 miles) earlier I burnt the fluid with when the filter clogged and it suffered hydraulic stall. It was a rust gutted 75 Buick Electra... It wouldn't go one day, so after a fiulter and fluid change, I raised both wheels off the ground on jackstand and observed that it worked when raised, and once I decided that there was nothing else I could do, I said "go ahead and shut it off, and she put it in park, before hitting the brakes or shutting off the engine. I got used to stopping cars in gear to prevent dieseling. this one did it for maybe a second.... my next car actually would diesel for a whole minute, btw.... We're so off topic
