This is from my friends thread on another site and I was curious to what you guys thought it was...

A family friend offered to give us their 96 Lumina and the way my car was handling today on this snow i KNOW i need a winter car. Got curb rash on 2 of my new rims damnit. Anyways...the catch to getting this lumina for free is that he says that their kids ran it with no or low coolant and now it sounds like it burns coolant. He said its either a warped head or blown gasket. What do you guys think it would be more liklely to be? This is all i know: It runs (battery is dead) and coolant is in the exhaust but it hasnt gotten into the oil or contaminated the oil. Obviously its mixing or burning somewhere, and i think it sounds like the gasket. WHat do you guys think? Is it worth it to get it and try fix it or could something a lot more spendy be the problem?

Does that sound like only the headgasket or is it possible that the LIM gasket could be leaking coolant into the cylinders at all?

coolant in the exhaust mean the head gasket is leaking coolant into the combustion chamber. I would say you would be best off buying a good used engine and droping it in. Others may disagree. It need at least to be rebuilt, and you risk having a cracked head. -ken

yeah i told him i thought the head would prolly be warped atleast if they drove it for awhile like that...i dont think he wants to do anything to fix it so i think i am gonna try to take it off his hands

Get some junkyard heads, have them resurfaced (& valvejob) and some new gaskets and get to work. I just did mine and its really not to hard (just note what wires go where)

Sounds like the head is warped, thats why I reccomend getting a j-yard set...

got a project then? have fun

yup hopefully...i need to replace my aging GP with a 4dr car and this would be perfect...and then it would help fund my 240sx project over the winter

Isn't it possible for the LIM to leak coolant into the intake air, and burned in the combustion chamber?

After doing a head gasket and seeing the LIM it looks like its very hard for coolant to get over there. There arent any coolant passages near the intake runners.

Coolant passages and intake pasages have rod in between. Dont think a bad LIM could leak coolant into intake passages.
