Guest Anonymous Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 I took the prix out for a drive today, and i had just parked it on the street, and i shut it off an noticed a small bit of white smoke coming up in between the hood and fender on the drivers side near the airbox. I got out, and popped the hood, and the smoke seemed to disperse although it was coming from the general direction of the airbox. The car was not fully up to temperature. We had alot of rain the past two days, and maybe some of it froze somewhere and was melting off and making steam? I drove the car more after that and nothing was amiss. Nothing is leaking, either, that i know of. Typical? Normal? Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 yeah it could have just been rain got in somehow and froze. Drive it again tomorrow, or when you dont get any rain, and see if it happens again. Quote
ScottMcM Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Sounds like I had a similar issue recently. Occasional smoke coming out of the driver side hood vent usually when I shut it off but sometimes at the first red light after a good freeway run. After playing the "jump out and open the hood as fast as I can game" a few times I finally discovered that the problem was the rubber hose connecting the PCV lines to the back of the engine. Assuming your 3.4 layout is simlilar to my Z34's, the bad hose was the short part of the T on the very back, between the head and firewall. From the driver side it is obscured behind the EGR assembly. The hose had cracked and was letting a few drops of oil drip out and down onto the exhaust. As I went to replacing this hose I found that all the rubber PCV hoses were brittle so replaced them all. No smoke since then. Good Luck! Quote

Crazy K Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Um. Why didn't you do what any normal person would do and OPEN THE HOOD AND LOOK? what??? Quote
digitaloutsider Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Wow. I totally read over the part where he said he popped the hood. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Yeah, that one minor detail It had occured once more (at a light) and when i got to my destination everything was fine. So who knows, next time i am upstate i'll tinker around for this PCV hose and see whats going on. Quote

White93z34 Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 for what its worth, he contributes more then you do. thats all i'm gona say about that. ross, look around where your thermostat is there should be a metal tube that goes in around that area into a "quick connect" type fitting when they swaped your engine it may not have sealed perfectly. but as soon as you see the smoke get out and look since it may be burning off of your X-over pipe too fast for you to see when you get to your destination. pwmin Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 steam prob isnt going to be white. i would say it might have something to do with the pcv system too. my camaro did that. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 anyone got pics? i left the car upstate so i cant go out and look  Quote
White93z34 Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 thats the best picture i have that shows that fitting (circled in green), you ought to be able to see what i'm talking about even with the plenum on. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted November 30, 2005 Report Posted November 30, 2005 Theres a little plastic clip on the pipe that white93z34 has circled that sometimes gets brittle and breaks. The clip has two tabs that you squeeze together to pop apart the coupling. I ended up just buying the entire coupling new from the dealer for $15 CND. Mine started leaking after the last time I had the plenum off. Its an easy fix that can be done with the plenum on. First, drain your coolant, then, pop apart the coupling, slide the clip off the pipe, and use a socket & ratchet to unscrew the other half from the LIM. Reinstall new parts and fill/bleed cooling system. Quote
