Could all of my problems be caused by a Transmission vacuum modulator? I hear somethin ticking or frying when I turn the car off. I also see bubbles on the transmission fluid check stick. I can see a small leak from under the car, right behind the radiator. This would cause a few of my problems (bold)

1. engine hard to start when cold

2. engine lopes while idling

3. engine idles erratically

4. engine misses at idle

5. excessive fuel consumption

6. cooling fans won't come on

7. bad fuel odor

8. no power in 4th gear

Yes that could be part of your problem except for the no power in fourth. The other three yes because the vac. modulator works off of vacuum. What all have you replaced on your car so far if you dont mind me asking? :) :?:

yes definitely check your timing belt if that is fine, check your cam timing and make sure you dont have a cam or two a tooth off! :)

Best way to check the trans modulator is to take the vac line off of it and look for trans fluid. The line should be bone dry. When the rubber diaphrams go bad in the trans moduator, the engine vac sucks trans fluid into the intake and the engine burns it. It can cause drivability problems. But the trans will shift strange also, and you'll be losing trans fluid even though it doesn't leak.
