ToroToro
Okay, I confess...I didn't check the oil in the Cutlass since I changed it 2500 miles ago. So today I did, and to my displeasure, it was nearly TWO quarts low. Car has 99K miles, I'm the second owner and has been dealer maintained until I bought it 10K miles ago. I've been changing the oil every 4K...Castrol Synthetic Blend, 5W30. Is 2 quarts every 2500-3K miles a little high? I certainly think so, but the car doesnt smoke at all, and there isn't any coolant in the oil or vise versa. Doesn't leak at all either, and it runs great. What gives? THe_DeTAiL3R
Definatly got an issue there. I never need to add oil between oil changes... but I do every 3000miles
94CutlassSLCoupe
Intake Gasket...my sister's 3100 did the exact same thing, and didn't smoke out the tailpipe
ToroToro
Shit! I was hoping I didn't hear that. I hope it holds until spring, or at least until I can find a garage to work in.
94CutlassSLCoupe
we drove ours for like a year and a half like that because my dad thought it was rings...then we replaced the intake gasket on a whim and it hasn't used oil since
DiscoStudd
Yep, it's the notorious intake gasket leak. My old 95 GP 3100 had just started eating through oil (about a quart every gas fill-up) a month or so before I traded it.

cryptnix
just suck it up and get it done ... the only thing that sucks about our cars is the upper intake manifold which displeases ANY person that embarks on it... tops 6 hours of your time ... in the end you'll be happy you did it... 19Cutlass94
Hey dont feel bad, my piece is up to 3 quarts between oil changes.
DiscoStudd
Yep, it's the notorious intake gasket leak. My old 95 GP 3100 had just started eating through oil (about a quart every gas fill-up) a month or so before I traded it. Ditched it! Nice! Fuckin' right! Ditched it for a sweet-ass 4 banger N-body . The best part was the trade-in value was grossly inflated due to the myriad of GTP coupes on the market. There was no differentiation between BYP SE's and B4U GTP's as far as trade-in value went, so I got more money for the car than it was worth (and, no they didn't manipulate the purchase price of my new car - it was one of those "best price/no haggle" dealerships...) Sorry to go off topic, but you should do the 3400 top-end swap while you have that sucker apart ...
ToroToro
Oh I will...I'm going to take my time, and gather some roller rocker heads, have them shaved, valve job, maybe even some porting, get the better intakes and TB, clean the injectors...etc, etc... I haven't done engine work on a car like this yet, but I'm sure I can handle it, and it'll be worth it to not have such a godawful slow car. I suppose I could have suspected the gaskets all along. The cooling system was so loaded with stop leak that the whole system was covered in shit brown goo that took forever to clean. And it's always used oil like this ( not quite as bad though )... Oh well...
pwmin
dude, according to gm spec's, most engines are allowed ~1qt/1000mi loss, so you're probably ok
bartonmd
My dad's always said that, unless it's something simple to fix, it's not worth fucking with until it's a quart in 500 miles... One thing I thought of... I didn't notice any oil passages into the intake manifold when I did the last 3 of those jobs... How are you losing oil through a gasket that doesn't have standing oil touching it?? Water I can see, but oil?? Unless it's coming out of either, the oil pump drive o-ring or maybe the lower intake in the corner where the heads meet the block, and you use RTV to seal it, but I've not seen that either... Is any ending up on the ground?? Mike
ToroToro
Nope, none on the ground or under the hood... :?
94CutlassSLCoupe
it sucks the oil right out of the lifter valley...i wish i had pics of the one from my sister's car
pitzel
Wow, I've only added about a quart in the past 15k miles, and haven't changed oil inbetween. Running Esso XD-3 0W30 full synth. Replaced your PCV lately?

SigEpCutlass
I haven't ever had to add oil in between oil changes the entire time I've owned the cutlass.
