badassoldspower Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 Ok I have a buddy who just recently bought a 96 CS 4 dr with the 3100 SFI (Super fucking intense) motor O his first day of driving he blew a head gasket, no mind you this was in fairly cold temps around 40º or so, we are trying to figure out why it would overheat in a matter of seconds. He said the "HOT" light came on, and the primary fan was not coming on, Im thinking it could be 2 things, A being air in the coolant system, and/or B being a stuck thermostat? Discuss and reply please. Quote
psychopyro31106 Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 I am his retarded buddy Quote
LumiDriver Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 AIR IN THE COOLING SYSTEM.. i have the fuckbox (3100 sfi) and i have the same problem, only i go fast enough where my thermo pops every few seconds (closes cause to coolant, then opens cause water pump makes it) Quote
badassoldspower Posted November 19, 2005 Author Report Posted November 19, 2005 I am his retarded buddy I wouldnt say retarded persay but...... :fruity: Quote
psychopyro31106 Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 At least I didnt hit a landscaping rock!!! what does it take to fix the air in the cooling system? Quote

psychopyro31106 Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 engine is probably shot now anyways, Ive heard of pistons and stuff cracking from the same scenario :bawl: Quote
Brian P Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 nah, just bleed the damn thing and go from there Quote
Rocketman Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 The coolant system could also have been neglected causing the degradation of the head gasket. This happened to the vehicle I purchased. It pushed the ring around the piston on the HG right into the coolant passage, it was egg-shaped. Quote

Rocketman Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 Well, the heads werent warped. I had them resurfaced anyways though. From what I can conclude it was pushing a small amount of exhaust into the coolant passages and displacing the coolant, causing it to overheat. (both cylinders 1 & 2 had blown gasket material) Thats the only symptom it had of a blown head gasket. Quote
psychopyro31106 Posted November 26, 2005 Report Posted November 26, 2005 I have my car sitting in a shop, but they dont wanna work on it. they quoted anywhere from 600-1600 for headgaskets alone & a piston or 2. My sisters bf is friends with a mechanic, he quoted 900 for all new gaskets, but said most likely the engine will still be messed up which is probably why the place its at now wont work on it, or he can drop a semi new (around 75k mile) engine in it for 1300. My dad said if the place its at now doesnt fix it soon he will take it back to his house and let it sit. this pisses me off so much. I drove the car a total of 45 mins max before it got messed up, and theres still a possibility that it could be repod. Which means I am stuck driving my 79 malibu which is gonna end up killing me if I hit anything this winter. The seatbelts dont work for shit, the brakes are going out, the engine has issues, and its not a decent car by any means, so if you dont hear from me in a long time, either I wont have my cutlass, or ill be dead... joey b Posted November 26, 2005 Report Posted November 26, 2005 Do you have oil in the coolant or visevera? Quote
joey b Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 it could just be the lower intake gasket Quote
psychopyro31106 Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 ^^^ you were 100% correct!!! Thats all that was fixed!!! its up and running again through the snow like a true champ!!! I love that car, thanks for the advice and info. guys, its much appreciated!!! Quote
Crazy K Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 LumiDriver, your thermostat closes because of coolant, and then opens because water pump makes it? The thermostat will have the springs on the engine side, and the valve would normally retract towards the engine side.... is your thermo in backwards??? I've seen it done! And dissing the 3100? wtf? For everyone else: If the cooling fans aren't coming on, I have seen several engine temp sensors (the one for the ecm, not the guage/light one) that give faulty readings and need replacing. (Many I bought from people who thought their cars were junk for a song) Also check the relays (I often break one open to use and test relay functionallity and attached accessory manually) -ken Quote
