Car running cold?

i think my car has been running cold today. in highway and city driving, The DIC temp (the guage one isn't hooked up) never goes above 160 F, and the heater is never really warm, and it doesn't run quite as smooth. At idle, the thing gets up too 212. Is this normal? Thermostat? Usually those thing cause the engine to overheat if they are bad, not underheat.

The thermostat could be stuck open, however if it was the temp shouldn't rise as high as it does at idle.

Are the fan(s) kicking on as they should be?

I find on my car even with my 195F stat it never warms up in winter...I ended up constructing a piece of cardboard to fit in front of the radiator...I think at least in my car there is to much cooling and air flow in winter....

What was the ambient temperature in your area today?

yeah, but i have to let the car idle for a LONG LONG time to get it that high. It is usually always cold, even in a 15 minute idle. I think the ghost is awakened.

Sounds typical of my car...won't warm up sitting there, you have to drive it for a bit to warm it up...but if you go to fast the cold air flowing through the rad coolings everything down to much lol...

I can't count how many times the TCC locks and unlocks on the way home on the freeway lol...

Do you know what temperature your thermostat opens at??? If it opens to low in winter then you won't have any heat.

My dad had this problem with his old '87 Suburban...we had a summer and winter t-stat because the 'ol 350 would run to hot in summer...but wouldn't throw any heat in winter

ok, now yesterday, something very rare happened, the car warmed up from 53 F when i first started it to 200F in about ten minutes. It never warms up past 161, and it cools down when i drive it! So shoul di get a new thermostat?
