ShockTherapy
okay, the Prix runs like a raped ape. fine. one of the accessories is squeaking. it's a wre wre wre wre wre wre at idle, but it turns into a squeal when you get on it. all the accessories have no side to side play, the alt seems weak (i hit the powerwindow switches, the gauges and DIC dim down, so it might be that, but i'm not sure, it was also raining last night. i left it in the garage last night, i started it, and the squeak was gone, till the alt kicked on... aw hell, that car's gonne be the end of me... is there an aftermarket alt that puts out more power than stock, because i plan on adding subs, HID's and some stuff... and would like something better than the stock AC/Delco unit. pwmin
sounds like an alt to me (the noise prob from the bearings and the low charge) . i got this alt (cheaper than i could find to have it rebuilt) http://www.mralternator.com/alternators/pontiac.html
digitaloutsider
What do you mean until the alt kicked on? The alternator is always running.. it doesn't have a clutch like the A/C compressor.. :?
3.4dohc
The alt. does kick on and off,I believe it doesn't charge at idle, which it then runs off your battery, then after a certain rpm is reached, the alt. will take over and charge the battery and run everything else.Mine is a 205 amp. and is expensive as hell. If you have a voltmeter, you can prove yourself wrong by measuring volts at idle with engine on, and then shutting the engine off and measuring again. ShockTherapy
well i had will stick his head next to the RF wheel, it apparrently goes away after 1,700 rpm or so.... i'm stumped.
GP1138
Maybe a bad tensioner? Also, take the belt off and fire the engine up for a second or two, see if it still squeaks.
3.4dohc
I didn't think it was a question of voltage..it should be generally the same all the time. It's amperage from demand.

94CutlassSLCoupe
i would say maybe your tensioner is either messed up or your belt is stretched/bad... Or you have rust on one of your pulleys (hmm...after 24k its almost gone on my water pump pulley)

3.4dohc
I learned a trick from some much older mechanics. Try using a wooden dowel as a stethascope.A rake or some kind of 1x3 board or something and put it on the accessory that you want to check(listen to) and put your ear against the dowel. It will get you very close to whats making the noise.Watch your moving parts though..but bearings(alt) and water pumps and such that are bad can be found easily this way. 3.4dohc
I could have the other part backwards,I'm only human make mistakes and dont do it every day anymore...But I do know that there is a point that it does not charge all the time..I believe that is what the diode trio is for. 94CutlassSLCoupe
i believe the diodes are to make it output DC current instead of AC
99RegalGS
The diode trio is the rectifier for the voltage regulator only. An alternator does not simply cut out at a specific RPM. The voltage regulator sences power demand and increases or decreases the voltage to the field coil to control power output.
3.4dohc
Yep,o.k. that sounds KOSHER to me. But there still is a point that it does'nt charge.
ShockTherapy
it's getting worse.... the car is still acting fine though, and i doubt it's the alt... call me, i'll start it for ya, you can hear it, a buncha people on the board have my cell. JoroCorona
O_o Alternators create AC current. A car uses DC current. A diode blocks flow in one direction, kind of a one way check valve. A diode can change AC to DC. That INTENSELY simplified, but basically thats how it works. An alternator is always on. It senses load and increases the amperage output. Thats called a load on the system. It creates a heavier magnetic field which in turn puts more stress on the engine and belt. On topic, sounds like the belt is either on its way out or out of tention.

ShockTherapy
i noticed there was balck residue (looked like grease on the WP pulley), so i started the car and sprayed some brake clean on the belt, voila, no more squeal, wow, all that headache, and it was something as simple as that. White93z34
so your waterpump is probably on its way out, you should replace that.
ShockTherapy
i'm taking a shit and going to bed. it started squealing BADLY again. to top it off pep boys had a reman waterpump for $20, with a $7 core, or a New one with no core for $34...i opt for the reman, "uhrrrr, i can't find it..." $34 dollars later i was in a shitty mood, did the damn water pump, started it, squealed even worse.... pulled the P/S pump, tore it apart, looked fine, re-assembled it, put it back on.... back to square one, i bleed the stupid ass fucking cooling system so i can go home from my dad's. for no reason, i stopped dead in the middle of LaGrange (US-45) slammed it into park, grabbed my old kenwood head out of the back seat, and weighed the gas down bouncing off the 4K rev limiter, i popped the fucking hood and sprayed an entire can of belt dressing on the belt, it shut the fuck up with a quickness. i go back to pepboys, and buy a fucking gator back, slap it on, nice and quiet. done. oh, and i broke shit as previously stated. one more thing breaks, i'm rolling the chunk of shit off a god damn cliff. CN:did the waterpump.... still squealed..... rebuilt my Power Steering pump... still squealing, accidentally broke the lower timing belt cover... replaced at the j/y.... hosed the belt down in belt dressing..... bingo... replaced crappy ass redneck brand belt with gatorback. wonderful, another $135 in parts and 7 fucking hours of my labor... and it was a fucking shitty old cocksucking belt. that would have cost me all of $16 and 10 minutes to replace.... oh well, at least i know my P/S pump is okay, and i'm rockin a brand spankin new Rev.B six blade waterpump. and on the plus side, on my J/Y run, i picked up a new (older) fuel rail cover, no more lame-ass 3.4L DOHC V-6 for me, now it says TWIN DUAL CAM V6. yep, TDC-V6 bitches. fuck.
