1990lumina
VIDEO - 11mb http://media.putfile.com/Excess-engine-knockingticking That's a cold start this morning. It was -10*C outside according to my temperature thingy I have...it was also -10*C inside the vehicle, so the wind blowing on the temperature sensor outside didn't affect anything. I stil have 10W-30 oil in the car...soon to be changed to 5W-30 as it gets colder. As for the straining sound of the starter....that piece of shit Delco battery is just that, a piece of shit lol.. Anyway - is this that normal sound before oil can get into the top end of the motor...or is it something worse? It's been like this since I've owned it, and i've put 10,000km on it since I got it.... What it ticking/knocking? Is there anything I can do to help stop it...if it isn't going to hurt anything then I'm not gonna do anything about it.... And sorry for the poor quality...I was just going for sound basically. Thanks! - Jeff L.
5speedz34
Umm, that sounds like rod knock, or a 3.4 that hasn't been started in 3 months. But if it quites out, idk. Throw some Lucas in it and call it a day.

1990lumina
hehe hes got the fuckbox, as shaun would put it. ??? It does quiet out once it warms up, however the noise is still there under moderate acceleration and a constant rpm....but not near as loud
LumiDriver
Hehe shaun hates 3.1s from what im told
maybe2fast
my Lumina would tick in the cold, it was just a lifter. if you want to see pop the hood rev it up and leave it at a steady speed...it sould sound like tick tickticktickticktickticktickticktickticktickticktickticktickticktickticktickticktickticktick.................................................then it will stop because the 3.1 has hydrallic lifters and the ticking one is probably just worn out. 1990lumina
Oh lol....yeah I don't love it or hate it....it's been reliable so far, but it is noisey as hell when cold, and it is rather slow lol...oh well...soon it will be my winter beater and I won't care as much
1990lumina
Thanks maybe2fast - I'll check it out later tonight
5speedz34
Yeah, you know what know that I think about it, collapsed lifter sounds right.
maybe2fast
mine would tick then the lifter would pump up and everything would be quiet
ToroToro
You sure only one would be faulty? I was under the impression that they all start leaking after awhile and get loud until they pump up. I dont think it's anything to worry about really, although yours is a lot louder than mine ( maybe I'll do a vid tommarow morning )... Restore will quiet them down for a week or so, then it goes back to the same old shit. I dont really care anymore.
Pabz
ewwww, your getting peged with snow!! ours melted, Doesnt sound like valve train, I hear alot of pinging.
THe_DeTAiL3R
The snow... Anyways.. my 2.8 was louder than my 3100 was, but back when we had our 85 T-bird 3.8 that thing was noisey as hell.. it made the clicking/ticking/clacking noise all the time. Just old age I guess.. should be fine, change the oil maybe some Lucas might help?
maybe2fast
I watched it againand that sounds like a knock, but the exhaust seems to be really loud up front...
5speedz34
If it was a knock like I said before the motor would be gone, I'm thinking lifter.
1990lumina
If it was a knock like I said before the motor would be gone, I'm thinking lifter. Must be something less serious because I've driven it 10,000KM and it hasn't gotten any worse.... So looks like the general thing is worn lifter...don't worry about it?? Or will it eventually fail?? I know I'm dumb about piston engines

SigEpCutlass
i think that's just lifters. Honestly, most of our cars make that damn lifter tick noise when it's really cold out. It's been said a million times, but GM has acknowledged the lifter tick and said it's okay. I don't think you have anything to worry about. My cutty has never ticked that much, but I wouldn't view it as a problem unless it didn't stop.

94CutlassSLCoupe
and 4t60-e trans front pump cavatation which makes a similar sounding noise, which is not as loud
GP1138
and 4t60-e trans front pump cavatation which makes a similar sounding noise, which is not as loud Is this why when I accellerate hard, the trans sounds like it's chattering? 1990lumina
GM acknowledged piston slap, not lifter tick. That's what I thought. I have a recall notice in my bag of receipts and whatnot from 1993 I believe. They could have also said about the lifter tick, however I don't have that recall letter.
