Dirty Rockstar
Well, in my quest to tune up the car, I am noticing more and more these sulfuric smells coming into my car.. Once and a while, it seemed to be coming from other cars on the road, but all too often I am smelling it on a long and lonesome highway.. So, instead of buying a new cat, the idea was presented to remove the cat and put in a piece of pipe in its place.. Just wanting some other take son this.. It wouldnt be that big of a deal here becasue Minnesota doen;t have emissions requirements.. What would I lose, gain, etc.. WOuld I get a nice rumbly sound, less hp, better or wors gas mileage, etc.. Thanks guys..
94CutlassSLCoupe
it will make it louder...other than that i doubt it will do anything. As long as it isn't rusted out I would just bust the guts out of it if you can get at it and put it back on. That way its still stainless steel there. fastbird232
My car sounds like ass now that the cat blew its guts out the tailpipe. So much so that I'm replacing the whole exhaust system this winter (the mufflers were bad anyway). However, the 3.4 is a lot raspier than the 3.1, so that might make a difference. Are you kidding? the cat is a big restriction no matter how good of shape it is in! and the hollow idea is bad! I did it to my exhaust and it sounded so hollow and echoee! straight pipe it and enjoy the better throttle responce and high end acceleration. 94CutlassSLCoupe
hmm...dyno tests don't lie...an old car craft i had ran cats vs no cats on a Early 90's firebird formula 350 and found that it gained 1hp and lost 3 lb/ft of torque by removing the cats. My car is registered in PA where I have to have a cat on it too. No sniffer test, just visual inspection...so the hollowing out always gets the nod unless you want to buy a high-flow
maybe2fast
well the gain of 1hp is what the 3.1 needs and the 3.1 can afford 3ft/lbs my Reatta has a straight pipe and it runs quit good after the removal (I felt a difference and I doubt I felt 1 hp)
solid_raiden223
Just do it man... It aint Gonna harm anything!
Pabz
I gutted the cat on the weekend, NOT Recommended, Straight pipe, i have no idea. Havent some of you used a glasspack instead of a cat?? I think the gutted cat sounds mostly like crap because the exhaust leak, I will be changing gaskets today, so i can do some before and after vids, that way you can see how shitty it can sound. fastbird232
Exhausts were designed and tuned for good sound and performance. You can't just gut a stock part like that and expect it to be better. Either replace the cat or remove it is my advice.

gp90se
do not use a glasspack to replace the cat, turbulance is going to slow down exhaust flow and hinder performance. I ran my GP around without a cat for a while, smelled like ass out the rear on cold mornings. cats don't go out for no reason, chances are you o2 sensor is shot, so change that as well. fastbird232
They can wear out.
gp90se
theres always a reason they fail, and 90% of the time its o2 related
fastbird232
Hmm..."methinks" it's time I checked my O2 sensor...
Dirty Rockstar
Another question: I am going to be doing the cat deletion after I check/change o2 sensors.. I have a dual exhaust fork from a Grand Prix sitting here that was cut off behind the cat.. It has a resonator, and I was wondering if I could cut the res out, put a muffler in, and then weld the dual fork to the muffler to give me a dual exhaust look.. Any complications in this? I would rather not have to buy and weld another muffler.. THans again guys! 8)
Dirty Rockstar
Bump-dizzle? Any input on this guys?
gp90se
your running a motor other then the lq1, put a pipe in place of the resinator and put the sommmabitch on
Dirty Rockstar
Thats the intent only putting the muffler in place of the resinator.. THen running the fork from there.. I am already deleting the cat with a straight pipe..
gp90se
gotcha, but if your squeezing HP out, you want the least turbulant pipes you can, which means putting the mufflers on the end of the exhaust rather then before there. Dirty Rockstar
Well, the location of the resinator is all the way, right before the fork as it is.. And I am not really trying to squeeze the HP out.. I want to get it running right, and since i have this stupid fork here, I want to use it.. lol..
