hmmm maybe i cut the wrong filter apart? or I am remembering the wrong number...I can tell you one thing for sure..I didn't try to put it on after I cut it apart ...hehe

you know the worst thing of it as is... I cut the first one apart with a sawzall...and then my father comes along and says why dont you just use the plumbers pipe cutter...the sawzall took 30 minutes..the pipe cutter takes 3 minutes and the cut is alot cleaner DOH!

I wish I had a pipe cutter that big :oops: actually I have an adjustable exhaust pipe cutter that would do the same thing. But this isnt for a few months, if I even do the next oil change on her car

Both the Fram PH3980 and the Champion Labs (STP, SuperTech) filters for our cars have anti-drainback valves. I have cut them both apart and you can even kind of see the antidrainback valve by looking through the hole in the filter. The FRAM sucks but the Champ Labs filters are quite good.

 

I'm almost sure anti-drainback valves are installed in all aftermarket filters that are supposed to replace OEM filters that have antidrainback valves. Engines with completely vertical filters just don't need anti-drainback valves.

I've always used Carquest "WIX" filters with Valvoline oil. The Carquest number is a 85040, but I've always used the long version 85036. I always use a quart of Lucas oil additive too. I have about 350,000 miles on my 2.8L right now and the motor has never been apart and I still have a ton of oil pressure.

not many cars have them completely verticle....the only one I can think of is the rx7...and it's pointing with the hole down ...on top of the motor..so you always make a mess....umm and it seems like a ford motor has it too..but i dont remember which one

My Silverado oil filter is completely vertical and the OEM filter has no anti-drainback valve. I would guess all the Gen III V8's (4.8, 5.3, 6.0, and LS1) are also completely vertical.

your silverado uses a adaptor to turn the filter vertical dosen't it?...not one that you put one..but from the factory...

 

Not that I noticed. I looked at diagrams on Alldata and it doesn't look like there's an adapter there either. Here's a pic of one:

I used to use Fram all the time(on my Wrangler) I dunno why everyone gives it such a bad status. Right now for the impala i use Penzoil(however its spelled) or an AC Delco filter. My friend being the K&N nut he is buys K&N oil filters and uses them on his GTP. But Delco an Penz for me.

Fram has a bad rep because their materials suck, their quality sucks, their design sucks, and overall, their filters just plain suck.

They'll still work fine, your car can still last several hundred thousand miles with them (maybe). They're just not as good in quality as many lower-priced filters. Not worth it paying more for a lesser quality product, IMO.

 

BTW, I used to use Fram for everything before I first saw that minimopar oil study and cut my own Fram apart to compare. The Fram PH3980 filter that we use in our W-bodies is just as poorly designed as the one that was dissected in the minimopar oil study.
