Jcrow Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 It sure does! even with 250,000 + miles on it! Compession is the same in all cylinders. roasts the tires at will. Quote

gp90se Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 I just put over 500 miles on my buick, got 36, yes 36 mpg doin 75mph going down, a bit less doing 75-90 on the way home. 3.1s are great motors for what they are, just not powerful 3100s are a different story Quote

The intake gasket thing is pretty minor if you ask me Quote
digitaloutsider Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 It's not minor when that Gen-III is in a fucking minivan. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 You should still be able to catch it before damage occurs....Water in oil/Overheating/Coolant Consumtion...just pull it over! Not rocket science Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 My 2.8 keeps going... and going... and going... Quote
AWeb80 Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 34 mpg....geez, I can only get like 26 maybe 27 if i'm lucky. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 Yeah...got 34 on my way home from Michigan on Memorial Day weekend...went 65 the whole way...I usually get about 29-31 going 70-75 Quote
TeeJay3800 Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 How are you guys getting such good mileage numbers? My window sticker rates my car at 19/30 MPG, but you guys are besting that by 4 MPG or more on the highway! Usually older high mileage cars are below the EPA rating. Quote
gp90se Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 it's all about making the car run as well as it can. my buick slips in 2ed gear some and I need dogbones again :? but even with the original wires, a stock paper air filter and slight lifter tick, my 3.1 purrs. Only things I have done to the car (car has 78k miles) is cleaned out the top end, changed the plugs, disconnected the EGR and changed the oil. Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 My 2.8 only gets 23mpg and it runs great. Only rated 18/28 by EPA though. Quote

My car has 38k on it...although my sister did the same with hers that has 92k on it...but it had a brand new intake gasket in it, brand new fuel filter... Really, the key is just driving the same speed all the time...sometimes i use the cruise, sometimes i don't. Even on work term during my commute, I still get about 25. keep the speed between 65 and 70 and the old 3100 just sips the gas. I honestly accellerate pretty fast from every stop. The worst mileage i have gotten since I bought the car was 20mpg. Don't get me started about the 35mpg hwy (its rated at 34) with the Quad 4 DOHC lol Quote
AWeb80 Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 is cleaned out the top end Done that. changed the plugs Done that. changed the oil. Do that of course. disconnected the EGR What does disconnecting that do? Quote
gp90se Posted November 11, 2005 Report Posted November 11, 2005 With a digital EGR, it has to be programmed not to come on, on a vacuum egr, you can block off the vacuum port to the TB so it never opens up. Mine is faulty and work make the car idle a little off, with the vacuum line plugged, idles mint. Quote
