Fun at the shop today

In the shop at the college, the high school kids were changing the distributor drive o-ring on a Cutlass with the 3.1. The car had a remote start, and the kid working on the car had the fob in his pocket. This particular remote starter has a shut-off so when the hood is open, the car can't start with the fob. Well, apparently the switch wasn't doing it's job. The fuel lines were off, the throttle body was out, and he had just finished putting the drive in place. The fuel lines were tucked inside the intake hole so that they were out of the way. Well, as he was leaning over the car, he accidently pressed the buttons on the key fob, and the car tried to start. Immediately the car revved up all the way past 8000 rpm's, what with no throttle body and gas shooting straight into the intake. It ran that way for about 20 seconds until our teacher got it shut down. All this time the antifreeze was pouring out of the TB coolant lines, and at some point the oil-pump drive popped out. After everyone settled down and the car got put back together, it ran just fine.

In conclusion, the 3.1 is tough as shit.
