LumiDriver
Hey all, I've just started having a severe temp problem with my car. When I'm driving, everthing is fine..but once I come to a stop for an extended period of time (I.E. Stoplights) My temp climbs like a damned monkey. But once I start driving again, it drops faster than a rock. Any Ideas on what the problem could be?
birdman
id replace the thermostat, inspect the raditior and hoses for any major problems and if its none of that go for a water pump.
supreme_style21
That, and make sure your fan is kicking on when it should be.
birdman
yea, should have a primary and secondry relay for them
supreme_style21
What exactly is is climbing to? Its normal for it to rise a bit at a stop.... there isn't any air moving through the front end of the car at a dead stop, so the temperatures will naturally rise somewhat. birdman
keep in mind the thermostat opens at 195 and fan comes on at
Kevinsluminaeuro
not te be off topic but what is the normal operating temperature when at idle and when moving?
LumiDriver
Well, would the engine ALWAYS be hot if the pump went out? Also..it climbs to about 240ish..and the fans don't kick on..and i know the thermo pops, just not when it should..ill check the thermo, and anyone have an Idea of where the relays are? I wouldn't go with relays. Check the coolant temperature sensor... its right in the front on teh block. If you pull the plug and jump the harness with a paperclip when the engine is above the 220 or whatever temp the fan SHOULD kick on, and the fan kicks on, chances are, that sensor is shot. Its like 15 bucks.
birdman
what motor does that have 3100 or 3800? i know mine has two temp sensors, one for the gauge and one for the ecm (ie. fan) mine for the fan was under the throttle body and the one for the gauge was on the back of the block. norma op temp will go up and down between 195-160 moving, still it depends on how long your sitting there but the fans should kick on at 230 and go off around 190. 230 is about 3/4 on the gauge. i would replace the thermo if you know its not doing exactly what it should, there only like 8 bucks. digitaloutsider
You also have an LQ1. I'm talking about the Gen-III 3100/3400.

Take the throttlebody off. 3 or 4 bolts and then you got access to it. It would be a major PITA if you leave the TB on.
digitaloutsider
Even with the TB off, it was a GIGANTIC pain in the ass on the Montana.
