Pabz
Two broken lifters The arrow is pointing to the bad one, it was alot more pushed in, but you can see how loose it is. So what now??? Can i put new/used lifters in without changing the cam? I know this is not recommended, however i do not want to take the engine out and i only need it running for the winter. Will i kill the cam if i throw new lifters in there??? guides look good no grooves. When i took the lifter apart there was alot of dark oil that was thick inside, i think this is what did it. Brian P
you could just put a couple of lifters in. It won't EAT the cam, though it will need to wear in the lifter face.
Pabz
Should i take the remaining lifters apart and clean them or just soak them in carb cleaner?
Brian P
I wouldn't bother touching them. If I was in your position, I'd replace all the lifters, and the cam as well. But being you just want to make it thru the winter, just leave the others. These two lifters, were they adjacent to each other? Any other signs of problems? Pabz
They were across from one another. Both for the intake valves. I didnt mess up the pushrods. Maybe i should load test the valve springs, or could it have been all the goo inside the lifters.
mihela816
It'd be easiest to just replace all the lifters now, instead of doing 2 now and the rest later. It is possible to replace the cam while the engine is still in the vehicle, by cutting a hole in the sheetmetal on the passenger side. A few people on this board have done it. Pabz
Well i am getting all new lifters, I read in a few places that new lifters on a used cam shouldnt be that much of a problem if the old lifters faces do not show any significant wear. I dont want to reuse the old ones since they could break when i get this thing reved up. Call me crazy or call me stupid. Its a 300 000 KM 2.8, I'll change the cam/lifters when i transplant this into another w-body with a dead engine.
Brian P
It'd be easiest to just replace all the lifters now, instead of doing 2 now and the rest later. It is possible to replace the cam while the engine is still in the vehicle, by cutting a hole in the sheetmetal on the passenger side. A few people on this board have done it. I helped do one cam swap by disconnecting the lower engine mount among other things, and lifting the side of the engine up. Long story short we were able to get the cam out above the fenderwell. Where are you getting the lifters, out of curiosity?
