digitaloutsider Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Well, I've got the subframe down, the alternator unbolted and everything ready to go except for one problem.. I can't get that POS past the CV joint and coolant line! It just won't fit between the two! What the hell can I do to free up some room here? Quote
slick Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 You undid the tie rod, right? What I do is completely turn the alt 180* to where the connection side is facing the wheel well, and it slides right out for me. I can seriously pull one out and pop a new one in that small ass space in less than 1 minute. Not kidding at all. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted November 2, 2005 Author Report Posted November 2, 2005 The tie rod end isn't in the way. Let me go try turning it around though. If I DO have to pull the tie rod, i'll be a little fucked. I don't have a tie-rod separator. Quote
slick Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Just undo the nut at the bottom of the tie rod, then take a hammer and beat on the bolt thats sticking through the bottom. It may take a minute, but it will pop out. Then just swing it out of the way. I find that I can usually lower the subframe just a bit more with the tie rod undone. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted November 2, 2005 Author Report Posted November 2, 2005 kk. I'll give it a shot. be back in a few. Quote
slick Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 If you still have my number, just give me a call. Might be easier than typing it out LOL. Quote
Canada Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Stop hitting the bolt........smack the housing that the bolt is in......good hard hits will jar it loose, plus not messed up threads. Works on ball joints too. Quote

digitaloutsider Posted November 2, 2005 Author Report Posted November 2, 2005 This is getting more and more infuriating. No matter what I do, that piece of shit coolant line is in the way. The alternator is turned all the way around with nothing connected. To make matters worse, I can't get that stupid cotter pin out on the tie rod. It's totally rusted in there. Just doused it in some PB blaster before I came back in. I don't have your number anymore, Chris. THAT STUPID COOLANT LINE CAN GO TO HELL. Quote
slick Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Yay for rust. Let that rust eater sit for a few, then take a good set of pliers and try to start wiggling it to break it loose. If you have to, cut it if possible. If you want my number again, message me on AIM real quick. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted November 2, 2005 Author Report Posted November 2, 2005 Well, I got the old alt out, but I can't get the fucking new one in. Between the tie-rod end that won't budge and the coolant line, and new problem exists: The 5-speeds have some retarded, seemingly irremovable bracket that runs over the axle. This piece of shit is in my fucking way, and I can't get rid of it, and it's pissing me off to no end. The automatics don't have this bracket. UGH. Quote
jeremy Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Did you get the new one in? If the old one came out then you have to be able to get the new one in. Sorry to hear about all the problems you are/were having. Quote
slick Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Like I said, put it back in with the connection side facing outwards. I forgot which direction the bolts have to be in, but you should be able to figure it out. If that damn tie rod would come loose, you would be golden.... Quote

If it's the mount where the trans meets the CV, than that is part of what holds the trans to the engine, and I wouldn't remove that. FWIW: Alot of people confuse the A.I.R. pipe for the coolant pipe on the 5speeds. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted November 3, 2005 Author Report Posted November 3, 2005 Well, it took a lot of bullshit, but i finally got that POS in. 14.5v at startup. I'm happy as a clam. I guess I'm an official 3.4 owner now Quote
