Replacing bad 1989 2.8L with 1993 3.1L

What do I need to change between the older 2.8 and newer 3.1? I am picking the engine up tomorrow (got it missing one head for $20).

I think the person blew the head gasket so I'm going to check out the block as much as possible and try to get the engine out of my car in a couple of days.

Should I build up the 3.1 outside of the car then put it into the car or should I get my 2.8 out, put the 3.1 block in, then go from there?

Any advice??

Unless you like the thrill of taking the engine out again, I suggest you buy a cheap engine stand from Ebay(got mine for $40) and put that engine on it, then go through it. New head gaskets, clean the cilinders, pistons, valves. New oil pan gasket, lower intake manifold gasket( ecpecially between the heads) and just get it ready for it's afterlife. Depending on mileage, look into the main seals, specially the rear.

Should I then rebuild the 2.8? Or maybe someone else would like to? It has 238k on it and if I'm not badly mistaken I lost a ring because one cylinder fails on a compression test.

Take it from me, you dont wanna be leaning over working on an engine, get a stand and finish it all nice outside first then drop it in. Your back will thank you!!

:werd: my body hurts after just putting in plugs  engine stand is a must!

Unless you have someone intersted in buying the 2.8 I wouldn't bother rebuilding it. Theres so many 3.1s around that it's almost not worth it, as good an engine as they are.
