Question about head removal

I have a 94 GP SE w/ the 3100 SFI in it. I've got the lower intake manifold off and i'm on my way to getting the heads off. How do you remove the exhaust manifolds? They have the heat shield over them, does that come off easily? Can I unbolt the crossover and leave the manifolds on the head to take them off?

And do you also have to remove the mount with the A/C compressor on it? it looks like it bolts onto the head somewhere.

Thanks in advance,

I normally unbolt the crossover and exhaust and remove the heatshields then pull the heads. Ill pull the exhaust manifolds off after I have the heads off as its easier. Just have some PB handy.

Be sure to check the rear manifold for stress fractures particularly where between the 3 and 5 cylinders.

Remeber, have a machine shop surface the heads and pop the extra couple bucks for a 3 angle valve job. Youll be glad you did.

I really dont have the cash for a valvejob...

I will check out the heads with a straightedge. I dont have the money to have them milled or to have a valvejob done. This isnt my performance vehicle. I just need it running ASAP, just enough to go 7 miles down the road back to my house.

The engine was never really overheated. The guy noticed it was running warm, got it checked out, and parked it untill I bought it.

cost to have 2 heads surfaced and get a 3 angle valve job done $75

cost to surface 2 heads $50

cost to not do either $0 Now, + whatever it costs to pull the heads and do it right like you should have the first time later

hot tanked, bead blasted, 3-angle valve job, slightly resurfaced heads including intake and exhaust port surfaces, new expansion plugs, new valve seals, and assembly cost me $191 total...that was BOTH cylinder heads. money WELL spent IMO.

when my timing chain broke and i bent two valves, they only charged me $25 to replace both valves and do a valve job on those two. that was nice.
