SLAMDIT
Hey Guys, I am toying around with throwing a 5 speed into the cutlass and I have done alot with the search function but still have a few questions. First off, how hard is this swap to do? Is it a drop in application or does it involve alot of custom work? I really would like to drop the subframe, pull the auto, put in the 5 speed, and be done with it. Now, I know it wont be that simple, but I don't want to spend alot of time getting it to work either. I have a busy winter for this car and it may or may not be too big of a project to tackle this year. Second, I would probably look for a wrecked car to use as a donor. I have good relationships with a few of the local yards here. I am planning on walking around and looking for a donor car this afternoon. What car should I look for? Lastly, I have seen a few posts on factory 5 speed Cutlass'. Did they make the 3.1 5speed as a combo or was it just the 3.4 that came with the manual? Any helpful info would be appreciated. Thanx guys... -Sean
Bake82
Sean, Here is a link to everything you will need. http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29613&highlight=swap Since your's is a 94, you will need to do some extra work for the clutch pedal. I can not remember exactly what is required to be done, however there are 2 guys on the board who have done this swap into a 94. Soccar playgtp was one and briag89gp was another(their names are close enough to that anyways) I think you need to change out the firewall plate aswell as add the support for the clutch pedal. It's alot more work that the 88-93 guys. but it can be done. Also they did make cutlasses with a 2.8 5 speed, and with the 3.4. 5 speed. However you are not limited to just the cutlasses. You will probably have better luck finding a Grand prix 5 speed. 88-90 was 2.8/3.1 and 91-93 would of been 3.4. Either way good luck! If my info on the years is wrong sorry!! SLAMDIT
So maybe my best bet is to search for a 5 sp grand prix? I am assuming then I can use all the pieces you said I needed to change from the donor car? I will look for a 5sp cutlass too but I agree with you, I am better off finding a gp. Sounds like it could be doable. I am also hard into the Taurus SHOs. I have a complete parts car in my barn, If I had the time and money I would throw a 3.0 yamaha v6 mated to a manual and have one heck of a couple. Oh well, probably wouldnt fit anyways..... thanx for the info Sean

Sounds like it could be doable. I'm not saying don't look for a cutlass. Look for both, but I'm saying it will be easier to find a GP. And all of the parts should bolt up to your car. I got my 5 speed parts from a GP and so have many others who have done the swap that have a Cutlass. Your biggest issue, like I said will be mounting the clutch pedal and firewall plate. Somebody with more knowledge about the 94+ will have to step in and explain exactly what needs to be done for that. That's all I know..lol...Good luck and I hope this helped. SLAMDIT
trust me, it's helping. I am glad to know it is mostly a bolt-in process. I was planning on dropping the subframe anyways this winter to powder coat most of the engine stuff. Now I just have to find a donor car. thanx Sean
stockgp
i think your car may require a swap pedal/steering column bracket. i'm not 100% sure what year it was, but i believe 94+ ws use a bracket that does not have a space for the clutch pedal. if that's the case, you'll have to remove your whole dash to do the swap
THe_DeTAiL3R
94 is OBD1.5 isn't it? That means you will have to either convert it to the older OBD1 (so you can put in a 5-speed memcal) or get your PCM flashed ($$$)?
stockgp
isn't there a way to wire the trans pigtail to fool the computer like the l67 guys do?
