A friend of mine is considering buying a 88 Cutlass Supreme with a 2.8L. The transmission is questionable - slipping in drive (I think). Unfortunately, it needs some front end work before it can be driven. So if he buys it and it needs to be changed, do we have to use a tranny from a 2.8 or will transmissions from other engines/years fit??

Thanks

2.8 and 3.1L have the same block so, I am pretty sure that these will work

125C/3T40 ( 3 spd auto, proabalby what came with it)

440T4/4T60 ( the 4 spd version of the 3T40)

4T60-E ( the electronically controlled version of the 4T60)

Or there is one manual that will work:

Getrag 282

There is another, I cant think of the name for it.

Im pretty sure on that info, but let someone else on here verify it first.

I know up through 1993 had them, (up to 94 on lumina) I think they brought them into the w-bodies in '90, the same time the cutlass/GP had the 4 cylinder available.

yeah and the 3.1L til 93 being the last year for the GP's before their makeover..then they got the 4t60-e
