f_399
1997 3100 I feel the gear that pulls most is 2nd Weakest I would say 3rd.... not 4th coz it always switches to 3rd and that goes all the way to the limiter
manitcor
4th isint really a gear, its your torque converter locked giving you a 1:0.79 ratio, its not really a gear though. 3rd gear is 1:1 so its putting out the exact power you engine is putting down minus rotating mass losses. 1st gear is your most powerful at 2.9:1 it pretty much steps down from there. DISCLAIMER: The ratios stated are slightly different depending on the year and the car, the 4t60 came in many gear combinations from 2.97 - 3.33 fdr
f_399
wow thats complicated stuff you will find out how weak the 3100 is when your on 3rd! i had a hard time keeping up with a 4 cylinder hyundai! nuthings wrong with my car its running great... i guess its the lack of power so in a dyno your on 3rd? manitcor- this is funny, we are posting the same things in 2 different forums

Is that entirely true? At light throttle, my converter locks up in 3rd, and then 4th comes after that. I don't think the converter is locking up twice. A long time ago, before I knew anything about lockup torque coverter autos, I thought my car was shifting 5 times, lol. I didn't realize until I started talking to people that one of those "shifts" was the TCC locking up.

Wow, post that on the 3800pro and you'll get suspended for too many laughs . 4th gear is it's own gear, with the clutches and all that stuff. Canada
The 4T60-E does have four mechanical 'gears'..........IIRC... 2.92 1.87 1.00 0.705 I could be wrong.....but there are four different mechanical gear ratios. Plus, the the torque converter can lock up, so there isn't any slippage through that. The TCC only comes on in 4th gear.

And the convertor in both my regals lock up in 3rd gear under light acceleration.
Turbo231
Yup, thats right. there are 4 mechanical gears and the lockup torque. And the convertor in both my regals lock up in 3rd gear under light acceleration. Same here on my 93 GP. Its easiest to spot going up a hill on light throttle...you can count the gear and TCC lockups. Best if the hill tapers off near the top. sdwhite
Sometimes...with certain transmissions... REVERSE is the strongest gear. I was able to get rubber in my '86 in reverse better than in 1st forward... EH? V-8 was twisting the frame off the drive wheel, plus, the reverse gear was just higher numerically than 1st forward. Guest TurboSedan
due to lack of traction in 1st and 2nd, i would have to say 3rd gear is my strongest gear
Miko K
My 1st tops out at ~50MPH, 2nd at ~90MPH and I never topped out 3rd(~145MPH), so I guess I don't know which one is my strongest 4th theoreticaly goes to ~230 at 6000RPM...
