AWeb80 Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 There are different types of red and yellow tops.....CCA's and such.....which is best for a stock motor.....and i'm moving the battery to the trunk. .....and do I even need to spend the money to get a battery box if the optima is sealed and everything.....i'll make a mounting pad for it, cause I work with sheet metal and i'll get that done easy. TGPilot Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 I had a red top in my DSM and loved it. Will probably be getting one for the TSTE and the TGP next month. They seem to hold a more "even" charge with or without heavy loads on the alternator... 8) Quote
GP1138 Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Oh hell, get a RED TOP. I got one with the Cavvy I traded a computer for, and it's the best thing I've ever done to any of my W's. It's never failed me... EVER. It's nice to be able to listen to music while doing a project, and to have the car start right up no matter what. Quote
Jcrow Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Ive got a red top relocated to the trunk Quote
AWeb80 Posted October 21, 2005 Author Report Posted October 21, 2005 Ive got a red top relocated to the trunk Tell me how you did it....did you get a box for it, or is it out in the open with it mounted to something.... TIA Quote
Jcrow Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Ive got pics at home I could post, but I made an angle iron holder for the battery that goes behind the pass. side wheel well It has threaded rods that clamp down another angle iron to the top of the battery. I welded a nut to the wheel well to bolt down one side, the back bolts to an existing bolt (bumper maybe?) I welded a bolt to the wheel well for the ground, then up front I welded a bolt to the front wheel well for the ground wire to attach. Then I ran (2) 4 gauge wires to a 150 amp fuse, then up to the remote battery tower under the hood Quote
AWeb80 Posted October 21, 2005 Author Report Posted October 21, 2005 So, no box for the battery then?, just stuff to hold it down....and i've already got 4 ga. wire running back there for my sub amp....so no prob. there.... Quote
Jcrow Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 You dont need a box with an optima, because they are completely sealed. If you use a regular battery they can leak acid and when charging, hydrogen gas is made. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Im going to get the yellow one, but thats only because it will support my system better than the red top. Quote
AWeb80 Posted October 21, 2005 Author Report Posted October 21, 2005 ya, i'm trying to decide if i need a red or yellow top..... Also, Is my 4 ga that I alreay have running back there going to be ok....or should I get 2 ga.? Quote
AWeb80 Posted October 21, 2005 Author Report Posted October 21, 2005 Ive got pics at home I could post I'm gonna buy a battery tray from Oreilly's.....but show me the pics of how you wired it up....thanks. Quote
1990lumina Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 I believe it was Aaron on here used 0 gauge IIRC??? I dunno if that is necessary for not, however if it was me, I'd use heavy guage so to do it correctly the first time. I think alot of people that have put their batteryies in the trunk are running 4 guage wire however. Quote

I'm running my battery to the trunk also its going to have 4 Gauge wire running to keep it charged thats all you really need IMO. Make sure you run your cables and things to the trunk for your sound system having the battery in the trunk makes it easier to replace to 8) Quote
Miko K Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 I'd go with 2 separate 4ga wires- one bolted to where the battery used to be and the other one-extra ground. In cold weather the length of the wire can act as a load and it make the engine hard to turn over, in some cases it could delete your radio memory. That happened to me before I added the extra ground. My $0.02. Quote
Kevinsluminaeuro Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 does anyone know if we can use this in the stock battery location of the car and there will still be room for the washer bottle and that fender brace? mines a 94 lumina jw cuz i wanted to get one to handle my sts signals and system Quote
Jcrow Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 Yeah, it should fit fine in the original location. You could look up the size on-line and measure your battery and see if it will fit. Quote
AWeb80 Posted October 24, 2005 Author Report Posted October 24, 2005 Do you have to ground both posts like you have?....and where are both of the postitives going....do you have a system? Quote
5speedz34 Posted October 24, 2005 Report Posted October 24, 2005 Do you have to ground both posts like you have?....and where are both of the postitives going....do you have a system? Sonyman did the relocation also. I also have my battery in the trunk. I would get a battery case just to be safe. My negative is grounded on the truck. While the positive runs back the front. IIRC- Mine has 0 or 2 gauge wire. Quote
