94CutlassSLCoupe Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Is there any reason why I could not replace my regular gen-1 style dogbones on my 3100 with the style used on the Gen 1.5 Lumina/Monte Carlo? I look at this picture and it appears that all the brakets are the same width and the bolt holes are in the same place. I believe this type of dogbone to be more durable and also provide better engine power transfer without vibration due to the smaller bushings. I would think this would also be backwards compatible to 2.8/3.1 MPFI cars if it works on my 3100 since I have a dogbone from a 2.8 MPFI car on mine now. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 If you wanted to, you can. Besides the actual dogbones, the only other thing you need are those brackets. So just transfer the brackets and dogbones from one of the cars to yours, and your set. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted October 20, 2005 Author Report Posted October 20, 2005 I probably will...does anyone else agree these look like a better design? Quote
Pabz Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 I agree, it is probably a better design using smaller bushings. Either redo the dogbones with poly bushings, or swap these ones in. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 I think the FFP dogbones are just as good, but thats more than likely cheaper to do. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted October 20, 2005 Author Report Posted October 20, 2005 I'll bet they use the same bushings as the 2nd gen 3800 cars...if that's the case i could probably upgrade to poly at a later date too... Quote
J Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 are they the same length? i would have never have though to do that swap, but now that u point it out, it's a good idea. Parts galore would be like $5 each Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 If anything the brackets and the dogbones would make up any difference in the length. But yah, it will fit. I do believe you can also get poly bushings for those too. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted October 20, 2005 Author Report Posted October 20, 2005 Yeah...they would have to fit as the Gen 1.5 cars are the same as the gen 1's from the wiper cowl forward Now i just wish i could get a free 3800 Series II with a $10 set of motor mounts! Quote
patgizz Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 i used them on my 94 euro with my 3400 and the 3.1 that i put back in when i sold the 3400. they work perfectly and are a much better design. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 94CutlassSLCoupe, Ill look up the prices since Im at work. Nevermind, you dont wanna know the price. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted October 20, 2005 Author Report Posted October 20, 2005 LOL thanks for the offer...I already own 1 car that needs the engine put back in it...Someday... Quote
Stevo Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 Looks like your engine is crooked. Quote
cutty Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 yes all you need to do is change the brackets, and switch to the newer style dogbone. when i got my FFP dogbones, i had to switch to the 94 style brackets, so that the dogbones would fit. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 yupp, basically like anything else, just need the time and money to do it cutty, How do you like those FFP dogbones? Quote
cutty Posted October 21, 2005 Report Posted October 21, 2005 cutty, How do you like those FFP dogbones? i like them alot, SO much better than my stock ones. my stock ones were so bad that whenever you shifted from park to reverse or drive. the engine would smack the firewall. and do so vibrate a little at first, and they help a little with faster acceleration. i love them!! Quote
Brian P Posted October 22, 2005 Report Posted October 22, 2005 I used those on my '90 Cutlass Supreme when I had it. Direct fit. Quote
Crazy K Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 It fits on all the 3.1 and early 3100s. The one thru nut n' bolt for the engine side of either mount is the same. On the forward side it bolts to the radiator support at only 3 points instead of 4, but the top 2 holes are the same, and the third already exist and you only need to force the bolt to thread the existing hole. The changeover seems to be mid 1995. Go rock a few cars at the J/Y and adopt the best two you find. cheap but OEM first! - ken Quote
