wbody1973
Hi, wa slooking into getting a 95 cutlass 3.4 dohc for cheap. cam timing belt is snapped. has anyone noted of trouble with the cam belt breaking, and the engine bending valves, etc....? The car also has no overdrive. fluid level is ok. color of fluid is ok, and doesn't smell burnt. any suggestions?
99RegalGS
The 91-95 LQ1's (3.4 DOHC) are a non-interferance engine. Meaning that the valves should not hit the piston in the event of a timing belt breakage. For the overdrive problem, do you know if the Torque converter clutch would still lock up in 3rd gear? wbody1973
I'm not sure about the converter locking up. I ended up gettin the car. Now i gotta try and find someone to time it other than a dealer. anyone know of anyone on here from central pa that work on the things My wife father tried 2 mechanics that used to work at chevy dealerhips, and they both said no. Thanks, Kevin
nebojsa_o
The 91-95 LQ1's (3.4 DOHC) are a non-interferance engine What about '96? Why the hell would they make it an interference engine in '96? Seems like a downgrade, lol.
digitaloutsider
The 96-97's are interference. You can try getting ahold of White93Z34. He lives in PA, and could possibly help you out there.
Psych0matt
when I did my belt change the marks were all still there. I lined them all up and went on my merry way (faster than you 3.1 guys )
White93z34
while the 3.4 is technically non-interferance, theres always the possability of bending the valves, for example if you were passing someone on the highway at WOT, you run a much larger chance of breaking something, however if the car is idleing and it snaps its highly unlikely that you'll break anything. don't know what to tell you about the no overdrive. but if you need help with it, give a shout, i should be able to find time sometime. slick
Actually, there really is no proof that the 96-97 are interference. After reading a few discussions over at 60*, it may be just like the 91-95: Only interfernce at higher RPM. And even this isn't true, as Ben(Vegeta, sappyse) watched a timing belt go at 5000 RPM, and none of the valves were bent.
JNGTP94
there is always a possibility of the bending of valves as stated above if shes movin fast enough then its all a matter of luck... as for the overdrive, could be a bad lock up, could be some burnt up clutches only way to know for sure is to pull the bastard apart! wbody1973
It left loose on the highway. probaly like 2000 rpm's. White93z34: I could probably end up having a garage ometime to rip the thing down if you were willing to make the drive to do the timing. I read how to do it on 60 degree v6, and looe myself every time. Hopefully it didn' bend any valves
slick
At 2000 RPM's, I highly doubt you bent any valves.
