IBuiltMine-o1oo
is the beretta gt 5 speed the same one as the cutlass and the grand prix had, minus the axles? I just wonder where everyone gets there 5 speeds from, since the cuttlas only had one for a very short time? thanks!
J
different bellhousing, if i remember right, and different gear ratios. Get a w-body tranny if ya can
GutlessSupreme
Plus I think it'd be the Isuzu trans, which is much weaker than the Getrag.
stockgp
i seem to remember the beretta could be had with a 282. the differences were the gear ratios and input shaft if i remember correctly. bellhousing should be the same
slick
The bellhousings are the same from every 60* V6. The axles, input shafts, tranny mounts, and gearing are different.
Guest TurboSedan
input shaft is different? i thought the ONLY difference was the FDR and gearing? and yes the V6/5-speed Berettas got the Getrag HM-282. the Isuzu 282 was mated to 4-cylinder engines, besides the Turbo 2.0 and HO Quad-4 which also got the Getrag 282 (different bellhousing of course). stockgp
i've seen a beretta 3.1/5 speed. the input shaft LOOKS way different from the w-body. might just be the housing, but i believe the lengths are different, too
Guest TurboSedan
just did a search on dialaclutch.com '89 Beretta with 2.8/5-speed and an '89 Grand Prix with 2.8/5-speed share the same clutch (same part #) and both have 14 spline input shaft. stockgp
okay, but that doesn't mean they are the same length
stockgp
damn it, i don't mean the input shaft. i mean the one that comes from near the bellhousing to the pass side and mounts to the engine
Guest TurboSedan
oh that's the intermediate shaft - basically a solid axle. yeah i'm betting that is different. i have actually seen L-bodies in the j/y with different types of intermediate shafts when i was looking for my intermediate shaft bracket. one 2.8/5-speed Beretta had an intermediate shaft with an integrated bracket, but then i found another 2.8/5-speed Beretta that had an intermediate shaft and bracket just like a W-body (still probably different length...but it did "look" about the same). i am using the intermediate shaft bracket from that Beretta on my Cutlass right now. stockgp
that's what i meant. for some reason input kept popping into my head. but yeah, ask over on beretta.net or something. i'm 99% sure the intermediate shaft is shorter for rettas and cavis
IBuiltMine-o1oo
i figured the drive axles would be different, but the main body of it would work. The w body 5 speed is getting hard to find.
Canada
Getrag 282 2.8/3.1 (J and L) 1st 3.50 2nd 2.05 3rd 1.38 4th 0.94 5th 0.72 FDR 3.61 Getrag 282 2.8/3.1 (W) 1st 3.77 2nd 2.19 3rd 1.38 4th 1.03 5th 0.81 FDR 3.61 Getrag 284 3.4L DOHC 1st 3.46 2nd 2.28 3rd 1.48 4th 1.09 5th 0.72 FDR 3.
Guest TurboSedan
Getrag 282 2.8/3.1 (J and L) 1st 3.50 2nd 2.05 3rd 1.38 4th 0.94 5th 0.72 FDR 3.61 so the FDR is the same as W 282. i would actually prefer the J/L 282 over my W 282. 1st and 2nd gear isn't so freaking steep, and more overdrive in 5th. stockgp
really? i can get you one from a beretta gt 3.1 for 250. at least that what i was quoted when i asked about it last year

Funny part about that, I've often messed with the idea of using a W 282 in my 3400 Beretta.......but you make a bit more power than me. Guest TurboSedan
yeah, even 2nd gear is spinning the tires under full boost. 3rd gear is fine. a 282 with less steep 1st and 2nd gear would be really nice, but then again maybe i should just think of getting a bigger turbo with more lag ie. traction control
