GutlessSupreme Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 I remember reading one a while ago, but it's gone now as far as I know.. I think Josh had one on his site? but I don't know of any others. Are there any good 282 swap write-ups still around? The 4T60's slipping and that 282s just gonna sit there on the garage floor and get cold this winter unless I do something about it... I need to go over a parts list too.. I know I need a clutch, pressure plate, flywheel and I need to track down the proper mount, and then obivously a custom chip still.. Also not sure about the axles I have working with ABS.. (not that that works either, but it'd definetly be fixed in the process of the swap. Hell I have two full spare MCs now). Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 i've been meaning to re-do the write-up i had....which sucked by the way 5-speed swap is 95% bolt-in ordeal though; the only thing that isn't 'bolt-on' is drilling one hole for the shifter cables and then modifying another hole so the clutch master cylinder fits into the firewall securely (that stuff is easy). 5-speed swap on the '88-'93 W-body is cake. eclipse5203 used to have a write-up on his website, but that's long gone i don't know of any other places online. Guest TurboSedan Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 was there something wrong with yours? i love mine. shifts beautifully and so far it's taking 10lbs of boost no problem! without a doubt wayyyyy more dependable than the notoriously unreliable 4T60. more fun to drive, smaller, lighter, more dependable, and cheaper to rebuild. That, and the board just needs another turbo 5 speed sedan. For good measure. Quote

My first 282 blew up 3 weeks after I bought it. My second, rebuilt 282 would be tough to get into 1st gear in heavy traffic sometimes. The shift throws are longer than any other manual transmission I've ever driven. The clutch sucked ass, it was grabby as hell, more so than any other manual trans I've driven. IMO, they're also geared too short. My 4-speed 4t60E pulls less rpms on the freeway than a 5-speed 282. Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 wow, that's totally different than mine  my clutch is not grabby at all....it's almost too nice. it almost feels like the PP has very little spring pressure....i can barely even feel the 'hump' in the pedal when it engages/disengages (i really wish it was more grabby). still....even with 10psi i have not noticed it to slip one bit ($160 Luk Rep Set clutch kit). i love the shift throws of the Grand Prix shifter i have. i thought about cutting the lever shorter but i just like it how it is i guess. i would actually prefer mine to be geared a little longer. freaking thing is way too steep even in 2nd gear for the power i'm giving it. i would much prefer a less steep FDR. i can't remember what the RPM @ 75mph was in OD with the 4T60, but with the Getrag 282 i see 2700 RPM in 5th gear @ 75mph. that's not bad at all. Kevin, you talk shit about W-bodies no matter what, so your opinion is moot Quote
LukeZ34 Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 I never had a problem with mine at all. It had 120K on it when it was put in the TGP, and it wasn't babied being behind the T3.1 at all. It still shifted good when I sold it, but the only problem was the slipping clutch after a few runs at the track on a hot day, most of which was because it was a shitty centerforce clutch. I think you just had a couple of lemon 282's. 8) Quote

94CutlassSLCoupe Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 I <3 Getrag 282 My god does that make our Quad 4 DOHC Cutlass fun to drive! Quote
brianteel Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 http://www.l67swap.com/forum/cms_view_article.php?aid=6 ther eis a write up something do not work because it is ment for the L67 motor but you can get a good idea. basicly pull the motor and shifter, cahnge the wiring and reinstall Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 Kevin, we should change your forum title to "Why do I own a W-Body again??". that'd be great anyways, I don't bitch about these cars like I used to. I just figured a 5-speed manual trans would pull less rpms in overdrive than a 4-speed auto. I just don't like them. I highly doubt I had two bum transaxles in a row. Quote
brianteel Posted October 12, 2005 Report Posted October 12, 2005 i am running a used 282 against a L36 and it is fine Quote

GutlessSupreme Posted October 12, 2005 Author Report Posted October 12, 2005 no problem....do you need a 282 I got one. I was being sarcastic, at least as far as most of you go. And no, thanks, I have one sitting in my garage right now with ~70k on it I think. Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted October 19, 2005 Author Report Posted October 19, 2005 Can someone give a complete parts list of the swap? I just need to figure out what else I need. I have: 282 clutch pedal shifter/knob cables cable hold down mount clutch MS lots of bolts to go through axles (did any 5 speeds come with ABS? because I'm pretty sure I have non-ABS manual axles :\) I have some other stuff too but can't think of it at the time. I know I need: clutch pressure plate}-where can I get these? JY only? part#? tranny mount}-x2^ flywheel?}x3^ custom turbo support mount custom turbo chip what else as far as parts go? Quote

Bake82 Posted October 19, 2005 Report Posted October 19, 2005 You should be able to get tranny mount at the dealer if you can't find it at the yard. clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel can all be bought new. Since you have ABS on yours, you can get reman axles with for the abs. Parts stores should be able to order them in. Just need to give your old ones as cores or they charge you an extra 30-40 bucks per axle. I assume when you say clutch MS you mean the master cylinder aswell as slave cylinder. I think that is all. Looks like it anyways. Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted October 19, 2005 Author Report Posted October 19, 2005 Come to think of it, I'm not even sure if there was a MC in there. I know there was a brand new fluid resevoir but I can't remember... does anyone have a pic of the MC/SC? good idea on the axles.. I hadn't thought of that. And I'm not sure but was it decided that the mount was discontinued? I sure hope not.. I need part numbers for: tranny mount and recommendations for aftermarket parts or GM part numbers for: flywheel pressure plate clutch (I think I have an idea, have to try and find a topic or two again). Also, recommendations on where to get the reman. axles. I think Davis got his from Napa and I haven't heard him complain yet so mabe I'll just try them. I need to leave for work asap but I might on be aim later tonight (in between all my chem lab homework). I'll shoot ya an IM if I get a chance Tony. Thanks guys Quote
