Dirty Rockstar
Seem to be having some transmission issues with my 94.. Gonna nurse it through the winter, but in case it goes, how difficult would it be to go to a 5 speed in it? In any case, I got a 96 3.4 w/ an auto attached to it.. Can I just drop my 3100, pull the trans off, and slap the 96 up without an issue? I am just concerned with it "looking" for gears.. Thanks guys.. White93z34
if you could get a harnas and computer for a 1994 you shoulden't have much trouble at all swaping in the 96 3.4 and 4t60e in. you'd probably be further ahead to just put another auto in the car since this is just your driver car, as i recall the 1994 ECMs are OBD 1.5 so finding someone to program out all the auto trans codes would be difficult. in the meantime dump in some lucas, might buy you some time. 1990lumina
If you mean you are coating for a bit, then you give it some gas it doesn't know whether to shit or steal third right?? My car has been doing that for over a year..so I think you still have some time before she goes.

Dirty Rockstar
Nah.. I got my foot on the gas, or holding speed, and it surges/shudders.. Worries me.. My Lumi used to do that as well..
Justin
Does it only do it at hwy speeds? Might be the lockup torque converter going. If so, it's no big deal really, some added heat from the converter slippage but the trans should still last a long time. My first CS would never lock up and I never had any other trans issues. THe_DeTAiL3R
Did you drop the pan? Make sure the fluid is at the proper level? I'm in the same boat as you. I'm changing my burnt tranny fluid as often as my motor oil.. it's been about 10k and the problem hasn't gotten worse
DiscoStudd
How's the fluid look? If it wasn't too "neglected" (ie, pink and not brown) you should get a tranny flush and filter change. Even if the tranny was slipping, a flush should buy you some time (as long as you baby it afterward.) I burned up the clutches in my old Caprice's tranny to the point where it wouldn't shift into 3rd. When I took it in for diagnosis I had them do a flush/filter and it shifted like new right afterward. It ended up lasting another 4 months until I sold the car (the guy I sold it to got a few more months out of it before it crapped out.) The 96 3.4 has a 4T60-E, I presume. It should bolt right up to your 3100 and work with your PCM. The 60-E is "electronic" but vacuum modulated whereas the 65-E is completely electronic and more reliant on the PCM... Dirty Rockstar
Hmmm.. I am having someone (hopefully) take a look at it sometime soon.. I am having my dad see about having the thing completely flushed.. THe fluid, I checked it last night for shits n grins, was pink, and the proper level when warm.. (Car running, after a hiway drive so I knew it was warmed up enough..) As for frequency, it happns mostly at hiway speeds when it seems to be looking for the gear it needs.. But it will slip going up a hill, or have a little hiccup at sub-40 speeds, whether I am in 3rd or OD.. Like I said, I am going to look into having it completely flushed and filled (Save 1 qt. for Trans X or Lucas..)
supreme_style21
Sounds like what Justin said... My '89 GP did that all the time and it was my understanding that the torque converter was takin' a poo.
Dirty Rockstar
Updizzle... My friend and I pulled the Torque Converter plug out to see if that would help at all.. It did something.. It made the car lose torque.. I hit the gas, and I was going nowhere QUITE fast.. Plus, the trans. was still slipping.. So, I am gonna have it checked by a Transmission pro, get the verdict, nd nurse it through the winter.. THen slap the 96 Auto off that 3.4 I have here and call it done.. Thanks for all the input and ideas guys!
