briandors
As I decelerate, or as I come to a stop, I can hear a "whomm whomm whomm" sound coming from the back. Lasts a few seconds and goes away. It's not the brakes because it will usually continue for a second after I've already stopped. Seems to go away (maybe more muffled) when I have a full tank of gas. The car starts/accelerates/drives great. Is this the fuel pump getting old and worn out? Do fuel pumps gradually wear out? If so I'd rather keep driving it until it shows SOME sign of going bad. I've never heard of a fuel pump that is 100% one minute and dead the next. But that's why I'm posting here. 1995 Cutlass Supreme convertible 3.1 with 143k miles Brian
bartonmd
most fuel pumps go out like "100% one time, and when you go to start it again, it's done" ... I've only ever seen one fuel pump that's gradually gone out... Usually you'll drive it and shut it off, and it won't start up again... If this happens while you are out and about (read: not at home), you can beat your fist on the bottom of the fuel tanka and usually get one or 2 more starts out of it to get you home, but usually not much more than that... WHat you area heating is the fuel pump running dry until the baffle fills back up... This is why you always drive with 1/4 tank or more, so the fuel pump doesn't run dry. Dan94Z34
the gas the goes through the pump also cools it. U know what happens if it gets too hot.
luzmina
Mine went out at 199xxx miles without any warning, it happens after I stop the engine, when I try to restart I did no hear the 2 second power up noise from the pump and I knew something was wrong, I cranked but the engine did not run, I checked the fuel pressure valve and no gas pressure there, so I have to towed it, after I replaced the pump and the strainer I play with the old pump and I found out that the collector was peel off in 1/6 of the area and when the brushes fell on this place could no make contact and run the motor but if its running it will keep running until you turn off the engine. briandors
Grrr. Would hate to spend money if it still had YEARS of life in it. But then I'm driving to FL in a week and a half. 18 hour drive! If it breaks down that would ruin the vacation. Tough decision. :|
IBuiltMine-o1oo
my buddy has a 94ish buick and it does that....then when the tanks like below 1/4 it stalls real bad...but when its full, it runs like it should.
briandors
Mine's still running great. Even on "E" with the low fuel light lit up, she had plenty of power and idled great too. Anyone have a crystal ball?
