SUPERDUTYD Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 96 monte 3.1. my coolant resevoir is filled with oil. not totally of course but appears that way because oil floats on coolant. i assume this must be the head gasket because oil is only in the engine/heads and not the intake right? i'm guessing oil is being pushed out of one of the cylinders. i will probably do the the head/intake/timing gaskets and o-ring thing all together. i almost look foward to this job because i haven't had to work on it the 2 years i owned it. 19Cutlass94 Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 More than likely its the intake gasket. The 3.1/3100 are famous for leaking intake gaskets. Quote
jeremy Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 if you have "chocolate milk" , then it is almost always head gaskets..... Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 i've seen it be both the intake or the heads on 3100's Quote
jdcutty Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 My call would be head gaskets. You gona be almost all the way there if you do the intake gaskets so you might as well pick up some new head bolts and do the head gaskets too. Quote
SUPERDUTYD Posted October 4, 2005 Author Report Posted October 4, 2005 when i replace the head gaskets do i have to adjust the valve lash? Quote
Justin Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 Just make sure it isn't tranny fluid, there's no red tint at all? Trans fluid would mean the cooler in the rad is leaking. There is a torque spec for the rocker arms, no valve lash adjustments. Quote
SUPERDUTYD Posted October 4, 2005 Author Report Posted October 4, 2005 no tranny fluid, just oil. so the heads just bolt back on. does anyone else make head bolts or do i have to go to the dealer and what are a good brand gasket to buy? Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 How could it be the head gaskets? There are no oil galleys in the head gaskets. The oil gets pumped up through the pushrods and drains back into the valley. I'm not seeing how oil could get into the coolant via head gaskets. I can only see head gaskets being a possibility if there's coolant in oil, not oil in coolant. I'll vote intake gasket until someone can explain to me the head gasket theory. Quote
