3100 is getting old and starting to leak....

i am thinking of either replacing the engine with another 3100 o its a direct swap...

is the 3400 a direct swap? and from what GM car would I be wanting a 3400 from?

Also any other direct swap engines?

Go for a 3400! The 3400 will be a direct swap, but you'll have to change around a few minor things (no big deal, though.) Just be sure to replace the lower intake manifold gaskets with the latest GM design before installing the motor in your car.

http://www.3400swap.com has a swap guide (although it's written for a 95 Grand Am, you should be able to follow along with your Loomie...)

ask Brian P for advice. He's already done that. I'd say why not add a little bit more power since your engine is hurting. As long as your capable of doing it, I'd say go for it.

I'd personally run the 3100 till it scatters...

...Then drop in a 3800 Series II since it was an option in a '97 lumina...it should also use a 4t60-e since the car is a '97 and you'd just have to swap the engine bay wiring harness, and probably the downpipe and cat

The 3800 series II will get just as good of gas mileage as a 3400 to my knowlege, makes 195hp/225lb-ft and actually has a decent amount of aftermarket parts (rockers, cams, etc...) that will bolt right on

Well despite being a huge fan of the 60* V6, the 90* V6 is a damn good engine. Hands down the L36 has a better aftermarket than the 3400 (LA1?). You could definately do more to your car performance wise with the 3800. Ultimately I think you'd probably have an easier time finding a cheap L36 b/c the engine is still being used in current models. It's up to you tho.

I know if my 3100 goes, you will be seeing an L36 Cutlass Supreme!!! lol

You know how many Buick LeSabres there are in junkyards with 3800 Series II's in them? its almost amazing

there are so many people telling me that the 3100/3400 gm engines are bullet proof...

meaning if you take care of them it should run forever.... this true?

for the most part that is true.....however, I just notice that your car is an LTZ....with that taken into consideration I would tell you to swap in the 3800 Series II

not positive but i think 3.4 has a shorter lifespan than the 3.1 and the 3.8 for sure.

the only reason for that would be intake gasket failures which would be also the same problem on 00-up 3100's.

The 3800 is also very bulletproof...in reality, your 3100 leaking is normal, especially with high mileage, and as long as it uses less than a quart in 3k miles, i see no reason to even mess with it at all.

ok, if i read that 3400 swap guide right, its amost a direst swap, you dont even need to chgange out the computer!

Now, heres a question.

1

Is the 3400 hes talking about the 'ol pushrod version, or is it the DOHC? I want the DOHC!

2

Now, is the DOHC pretty much a head difference on the 3400? I mean same boltup to the tranny and same engine management?

I want to put a DOHC 3.4 in my 97 cutlass with it still using the mass air flow. im good at OBD-II systems as i have built a 455 olds with a 94 ford wiring harness to make it all EFI.

FWIW: the 3400 is a pushrod, it isn't the LQ1 DOHC.
