Fmr12B Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 Popped open the inspection cover, noticing that the bolts were mismatched, one 8mm and one 10mm. Hopefully a good sign the belt had been replaced once prior. So the top of the cover had some rubber dust but no large strips and the amount of belt dust seemed pretty minimal, Of course I have no idea what I'm talking about as I've never owned a 3.4L car. Car has 105K miles on her and is a '95. Any insight on what a belt/inspection cover looks like of the belt is needing an immediate replacemnet? I guess when I pick up the car sometime this week I'll post pics for the experts to give their 2cents on! :? Quote
Psych0matt Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 if its needing replaced it will show apparent wear of course, but it will have what looks like hairs fraying off and lots of dust. if its like that then it definitely needs a new t-belt Quote
jeremy Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 sometimes a worn belt will either be frayed or if you look hard enough you can see "metal" coming through the belt, like in the picture below that I borrowed from a different thread Quote
chadz34 Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 I can't make out the metal you see..... :? Quote
jeremy Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 it is minimally noticeable in the pic Quote
Psych0matt Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 are you talking about where the belt is worn on the edges so that the teeth stick out slightly? Quote
1990lumina Posted October 3, 2005 Report Posted October 3, 2005 are you talking about where the belt is worn on the edges so that the teeth stick out slightly? That is what I see as well Quote
Vegeta Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 that belt doesnt look bad to me.....but its just a picture too. Ive seen much worse than that still working fine. Quote
Redfox340 Posted October 4, 2005 Report Posted October 4, 2005 Where's the picture of when my timing belt sharded? I'll have to dig that out and post it... - Erik Quote
Turbo231 Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 Yea..that's my belt...and she's showed metal for about 50k miles now. All's well that ends well. Quote

badassoldspower Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Yeah timing belts are no big thing, you dont really need em. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Yeah, just tie a string around the cogs. Works perfect. Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 You silly DOHC owners with your stupid timing belts Quote

Kalgorn Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 i know like digital outsider said strings work just fine Pffffffft! Real men use duct tape. Worked for me... Quote
badassoldspower Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 i can top that, i think the optimum thing to use would be spaghetti noodles Quote
digitaloutsider Posted October 7, 2005 Report Posted October 7, 2005 Everyone knows paper mache´is worlds better Quote
Turbo231 Posted October 8, 2005 Report Posted October 8, 2005 Nice thing about spaghetti noodles is they can get wet...unlike paper mache which is toast after a few drops...and if it doesn't get wet, then it catches fire..thats not so good either. I personally am saving up used dental floss. Why throw this stuff away? Quote
