GnatGoSplat
Eventually, but probably not now. I read on the web that Toyota Prius batteries last approx 120,000 miles and cost $6000. That's $0.05/mile. Then if they get 50mpg (just guessing), at $2.75/gallon that would be $0.055/mile. Total operating cost (not counting maintenance) would be $0.105/mile. Now consider a midsize gasoline car that averages 25mpg, that's $0.11/mile. So after 100,000 miles, you've only saved $500. Considering a Prius costs well over $500 more than an average midsize gasoline car that gets 25mpg, owning the Prius actually cost you MORE in the long run. Of course, I could be off on my calculations, but hybrids aren't looking too hot either.
mihela816
The Prius and Civc hybrids are a joke compared to the Insight. I don't understand why Honda can't get nearly the same milage out of the Civic as the Insight. 70 MPG would make the savings much more substantial. Honda's warranty covers the battery for 8 years, and from what I've read they cost ~$3000 to replace. The parts cost is about $1300.

1990lumina
I've also heard a draw back to E85(in vehicles not designed for it) is it is more corrosive to the fuel system...but I dunno if that's true or not. There are quite a few stations around here offering E85 (or "ethanol blended gas")
