bluegp Posted October 2, 2005 Report Posted October 2, 2005 IIRC, the Grand Prix NA 3.1 had the 440T4/4T60 up to '92 and the 4T60E from '93-'96 (Correct?). If one wanted to swap a 440T4/4t60 into a car that has a 4T60E, what would be involved? Would the computer from the 3.1/440T4 car need to be used? If so, could it be used in the car that originally had the 3.1/4T60E without swapping harnesses? I guess that if the car in question has a 3100, it's probably a no-go, but like I said, what if it's a 3.1? The reason I ask is that my '89 Grand Prix may not get put back on the road and it has a recently rebuilt, perfectly functioning 440T4 that I do not want to junk. If I end up getting a slightly newer W-Body with a 4T60E, I'm wondering if my older tranny could be used if need be. Quote
bluegp Posted October 5, 2005 Author Report Posted October 5, 2005 Not even a "use the search" or "no, dummy, it won't work"? Well, I did search a little, but didn't see anything. I don't know if I want to put the money into my '89 if I can find another one cheaper with less rust. If the engine didn't run good and if it didn't have a practically new transmission, it wouldn't be so hard to decide. But anyway, so far I've been looking at '88-'92(?) W's so that if need be I could use my transmission. I'd like to avoid getting a '93(?)-'96 if the swap wasn't possible since our transmissions are known for going bad. Also, my vacuum controlled, non-E tranny shifts soooo much nicer (not only the shifts themselves, but the shift points) than what I've experienced with the E-unit in my '96. Quote
patgizz Posted October 5, 2005 Report Posted October 5, 2005 well #1 you need to get the different style speed sensor to work with the ECM #2 the lockup wiring is different #3 the electronic trannies use solenoids to control line pressure. the 440-t4/4T60 uses a TV cable. there's no bracket or place to hook it to on a 3x00, and the 3.1 would require bracket/throttle body to be swapped from the car the trans came from, or one with a 440-t4 anyway due to the wiring - chalk it up to not a good idea and probably not possible without having things not work right like things that require the speed sensor to deliver the proper signal to the ECM. if you're that worried find an 88-92, or sell the trans if you junk the car.
