snowboard2death
Hey, I'm new here, was at americanolds.com for a while, but their forums are slightly lacking the details I need. I have a 96 cutty supreme ls, with the 3100 and a 4 speed auto. The car and trans have 168k, and it has a newer engine (3100) that has 70k. I bought the car back in spring, but didn't really rod on it when i test drove it, which kept me from realizing any problem. I parked it in my garage for summer and just licensed it a month ago. Since I've had it on the road, I haven't been able to get it into 1st or 4th gear. If I put it in drive, it will shift to 3rd and stay there (from a stop). I can manually shift it into 2nd and into 3rd, but when I go to drive from there, it wont go into 4th. If I manually shift to 1st from a stop, it will go to 2nd. This all makes for wonderful gas mileage... Now, I had a mechanic friend run a diagnostic machine on it and it pulled up the following codes: P0719 - TCC/Brake sw 'B' circuit signal low P0753 - 1-2 Shift solenoid 'A' circuit fault P0756 - Shift solenoid 'B' porf or stuck off P0758 - 2-3 Shift solenoid 'B' circuit fault P1864 - Torque connection clutch circuit electrical He gave me the address of the garage of the only (truly) reputable tranny guy near my house, but its 30 miles away, and 3rd gear on the highway will put me at about 3/4 of a tank of gas there and 3/4 back. And I really can't afford that right now, especially with the wonderful gas prices. I called the guy and he said its most likely my pcm, solenoids, or possibly the wires to the trans were simply hooked up wrong when the new engine was dropped in. I've been unable to get back in touch with him, so I have no idea what wires are suppose to go where. The hayne's manual schematic shows 7 wires alltogether for the trans, but there is two plugs on my car, one with 7 wires, one with 4, and they aren't the same colors as shown in the schematic. If all I have to do is follow the wires and make sure they're connected correctly, then I definatly don't want to make the 30 mile drive. If anyone has any ideas or has heard of this before and thinks its something else, any suggestions would be appriciated. Thanks!
pwmin
sounds to me like the wires or connections. pull out the connections and make sure the connectors inside dont move when you push on the wires while holding the connector. also, use a continuity tested to test the wires at the tranny and where they connect somewhere else. I thought the same thing after seeing those codes.

Even running on the highway in 3rd gear should get you at least 23+ MPG on the highway.
snowboard2death
Yeah, in reference to the 3/4 of a tank thing, that was definatly way overshot. But I definatly don't get 23 mpg on the high way in 3rd, the tach shows like 4000-4500 rpm going 70-85, which does eat up gas pretty quick. But I recently realized that there's back roads to this place with speed limits of like 35-50, so I shouldn't have a problem there. BUT... both replies seem to think its connections to the tranny (which I checked). They were tight and seemed to be in good condition. I'm going to pick-up a continuity tester (on recommendation) and see if a wire isn't broke somewhere. But there was a new engine dropped in the car, the old transmission was kept. Its the same 3100 engine, I'm just wondering if they didn't put the wires in the wrongs spots. The Hayne's manual's electrical schematics aren't very detailed, and the wires in the car are not the same color as described in the book. Does anyone know where I can get a color coded, accurate schematic of the tranny's electrical system, because that would help a LOT. Thanks for the advice, and feel free to keep it coming. -Justin
