5speedz34 Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 I'm pulling a trans this weekend and the car is in the air, wheels off, and I won't have acess to hand tools. Whats the best way to get it off? Quote

5speedz34 Posted September 29, 2005 Author Report Posted September 29, 2005 Jay, I talked to Aaron and he says we should be able to unbolt the wheel bearing and seperate it and the CV and axle nut will come out with it. Quote
J Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 ok i read it again and now know you guys are not gonna fuck..... as for getting your nut off . BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA Quote
slick Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 You two have fun this weekend. Just not too much fun. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Jam a giant screwdriver through one of the "vents" in the rotor to keep it from spinning, then use a 30mm (IIRC - it's been a while) socket on a 1/2" drive ratchet with a huge extension bar on the end to bust the nut loose ... Quote
slick Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Jam.... blah blah blah... to bust the nut loose ... Thats all I read. Quote
5speedz34 Posted September 29, 2005 Author Report Posted September 29, 2005 Heres what I plan to do. Quote
94CutlassSLCoupe Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Junkyard??? torch that sucker out!!! If the brakes still work on the car, they are usually strong enough to hold the bearing still while you take the nut off. Quote
Redwingvksm Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Oooooo - ok. I've had to do that before - just get a 1/2" drive ratchet, a pipe to fit over the end, and the right size socket. When I had to do this I actucally stepped on it and just bounced until i felt it twist - and voila. It came right off... Quote

GutlessSupreme Posted September 29, 2005 Report Posted September 29, 2005 Axle nuts are 36mm, and good luck getting them off with both front wheels off the ground. It's gonna be hard to lock the hub up somehow.. with both sides in the air you're just gonna spin the other hub... That's something else you can do.. find a hardware rental place around you to see if you can rent an electric impact gun. I don't know if you'll be able to get some extention cords out into the yard... If you can find a way to lock the hubs, you'll be all set with just the 36mm socket and a 24" breaker bar. Quote

joey b Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 Pipe wrench to Hold the Axle and a 24" breaker. Shouldn't be too hard. Put the pipe wrench on the axle. I've done that a couple of times and have had absolutely no problem. (If that's what you need to do) Quote

Have you read the above posts? I missed yours about unbolting the hub itself, but besides that, it takes a hell of a lot of torque to break that nut loose, and I can't picture how you easily wedge the hub/rotor/whatever in place using a screwdriver. mihela816 Posted October 1, 2005 Report Posted October 1, 2005 Believe him, it works. I just did it to a couple out of the car on the ground. Quote
99RegalGS Posted October 1, 2005 Report Posted October 1, 2005 if you're trying to get the axle out and the hub is already unbolted, just jack up the A arm untill it's level then grab the hub with both hands and give it a sharp pull. The axle will pop right out. Quote
