derricknotorious
i have heard that a 3100 will bolt right in as long as the engine is out of a 94-95 grandprix and that the 3.4 wiring harness and computer will still work is this true if not please reply
digitaloutsider
The computer will not work. Some things on the wiring harness will need to be changed. Why the hell would you want a 3100 over a 3.4 anyway?
THe_DeTAiL3R
3100s are slightly better on gas, but I would stick with the 3.4. You'll miss the performance!
derricknotorious
it is very hard to find a 3.4 dohc in chicago and i want a engine that is reliable do u guys have any ideas
TeeJay3800
You'll have a lot more low-end and driveability with the 3100, plus its just as mod-able as the 3.4. Good choice Sorry I can't help with swap info.
maybe2fast
what happened to the old one?
digitaloutsider
What exactly do you mean by "more drivability"? And I certainly wouldn't say "a lot more low end".
TeeJay3800
The 3100 certianly has more low end. If you think it doesn't, then I don't even know what to say. That is what I meant by driveability. Its power is a lot more useful for daily, around-town driving. You don't have to rev the shit out of it to get into the strong part of its power band. I still like the 3.4, I was just pointing out the 3100's strengths to a guy who is about to have one (even though he prolly already knows). Still, this should seriously not become an engine vs. engine thread. I'm done.
digitaloutsider
I'm not trying to make it one, but I rarely.. RARELY ever get over 2.5k RPM driving around the city. It may be DOHC, but it's not a 4-banger. My 3.1 and 3400 on the other hand, I had/have to push to get any sort of satisfactory acceleration. jeremy
just swap in another 3.4, I have owned 2LQ1s and a 3100. There is NO comparison, the LQ1 is handsdown better, IMHO of course. I have a hard time believing that it is that hard to find a 3.4 in Chicago. I could probably find few a couple dozen within 10 minutes of searching. Plus I don't think the 3100 is just a plug and play swap.

THe_DeTAiL3R
You'll have a lot more low-end and driveability with the 3100, plus its just as mod-able as the 3.4. Good choice Sorry I can't help with swap info. I'd have to disagree. Sure, 3100s have OK low-end torque (3400s a bit better), but 3.4s aren't really any worse. If you want more torque, get a 3800... As far as modding, the 3.4 has more potential IMO. I'd seen alot more 3.4s in the low 15s-mid 14s compared to 3100s that are what, mid 16 if they're lucky? Not to put down the 3100 at all, cause it's a great engine, but I still think he should stick with a 3.4 since that's what his car had to begin with. 19Cutlass94
If your car came with the 3.4 then you should stick with it. No sense in downgrading to a smaller engine. Just about the only thing better on a 3100 than a 3.4 is gas mileage. And if you keep your foot out of the 3.4, those numbers can become rather close. Other than the gas mileage, it makes no sense to down grade on engines.
TeeJay3800
Not to put down the 3100 at all, cause it's a great engine, but I still think he should stick with a 3.4 since that's what his car had to begin with. I agree, but I think you're wrong about the low-end issue. I've seen several magazines totally rip on the 3.4 for its lack of grunt below 3,000 rpm. I remember a quote saying something like "can't even sqeak the tires leaving the line." Also, I've driven several, and although the high rpm pull is great, the lack of grunt down low left me wondering why people like the engine so much. Any way, its still a great engine and I do agree that if the car came with it, he might as well try to find another 3.4.
timg
I've driven 3100 cars and ridden in 3.1 cars. The 3100 is pretty weak stock- it's low end is no better than the LQ1 (probably worse) and the 3.4 DOHC kills it on the high end. I have seen overlayed dynos before and at no point did the stock 3100 have an advantage over the 3.4 DOHC. The 3.1 (like what you're running) is a completely different story. They low end on those seems to compare favorably with the 3.8 IMO. Tim
TeeJay3800
I suppose you're right. The 3100's TQ doesn't peak until 4,000. Thats right on par with the 3.4, but it does still build at lower RPM however. Yeah the 3.1 doesn't have as MUCH power as the 3800, but it produces it in a similar way.
