88GPSE Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 I just acquired a 1988 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. I just completed a new plugs/air filter/o2 sensor tune-up on it and it runs a lot better. It has a digital speedometer that does not work. I tried resoldering parts inside per a search on this board, but it still does not work. What is a good alternative to get this speedometer problem fixed? It's primary use is to commute from Southern PA to DC Metro 3 days a week, and the Maryland Mounties like to sit... and I don't think a broken speedometer is going to be a viable excuse for getting out of a ticket. I'd like to stay digital, but what other car's clusters will work in this car... until I can get the digital stuff refurbished? Quote
stockgp Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 you could try the speedo from another dash. i've got a junk one. you pay shipping and i'll send you the speedo Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 I have a cluster from my old 88 GP SE... it's got 280,000km on it (about 168000miles) $20 + shipping Quote
stockgp Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 you're engine must have screaming for mercy Quote

THe_DeTAiL3R Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 you're engine must have screaming for mercy I gave it a good last rev goodbye. HAHAHA! Quote
GP1138 Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 WTF? That systems monitor looks space age-y. Here's my old one: Also, if you buy that cluster from C-Bad, you'll have to just swap the speedo module. The rest is in metric units rather than imperial. Quote
stockgp Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 it's them damn cantadians. "Canada, America's hat." don't know why i thought of that, but there it is Quote

Guest Anonymous Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 I'm having major deja-vue of this thread. CBAD, that systems monitor is from one of the old dust buster vans. I would like to buy it if the other guy doesnt... i'll PM you about it. For the other guy, i may have another digital speedo for you. I have one in good working order, im just replacing it with one with mileage that reflects the actual, as i did a swap into a 92. Quote
stockgp Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 seirously, thought. that car on that cluster looks like a trans sport :? oops you beat me to it Ross Quote
GP1138 Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 seirously, thought. that car on that cluster looks like a trans sport :? oops you beat me to it Ross I forgot the Trans Sport had a Grand Prix-ish interior. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 Yeah we went over this before about it looking like it's from a Transport.. lol Are you SURE that it isn't the same as imperial? I mean I was able to just flick the button to go from MPH to KM/H same for the odometer. Only real difference I see is that the temp is in Celicious rather than *F. Ross you have a PM. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 very, very similar interior. I wonder if you can add a first gen HUD and DIC to a transport as well. The Trans Sports didn't come out until 1990, and the digital dash was discontinued in 1989... so who knows? Quote
stockgp Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 celicious. sorry that made me laugh. Quote
stockgp Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 from what i understand, the hud operates on it's own, doesn't it. it gets it's own vss signal and ses light, i think. if so it should work with the digi dash Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 1988 didn't have HUD as an option anyways, so I don't think it matters (unless you are putting it in a different year maybe) Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 No it doesnt.... I was speculating on adding a first gen GP hud and dic into a transport. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 No it doesnt.... I was speculating on adding a first gen GP hud and dic into a transport. LOL... that sure would be interesting considering the huge angle the windshields are! Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted September 14, 2005 Report Posted September 14, 2005 i would make for a cool project.... Anyway, back onto the subject matter. Quote
