Trans Whine

LuminaPower92

Recommended Posts

Hey, What's Up? I have a 93 Lumina Z34, with a whine that is high pitched when it is at idle, and then when you drive off its on until it shifts into 2nd gear and from there on its off. Ive notice on my 2 other 92 sedans with the 4t60 trans, its on there but its not really noticeable unless your listening for it. Any ideas on how to solve this on my z, its the only real issue with the car.

Thanks for the help in advance.

actually i have new belts and such so i dont think so. Its weird, i mean i wouldnt be so picky but it gets annoying. I like having a one of kind z34 round here, but i dont want to be sounding like im kicking on the supercharger mad max style.

How about this. May be it's the Ps pump low fluid or bad bearing or The timing belt or chain. I think the early 3.4's had both. If my book is right? I traced the same sound for a while and found it was my Ps pump bearing and water pump bearing. Not sure why the sound would go away after 2nd gear. But its a quiet know may be the engine is spinning lower rpm's. good luck also look at the Vacuum line going modulator valve maybe leaking. just some thoughts.

Hello,

What you need is a mechanical stethoscope...or a metal bar. It allows you to place a metal rod against a bearing casing and lets you "hear" if it's making lots of noise. I used it when I thought my transmission was making noise but it ended up being my water pump. See link below for a cheapy....

Harbor Fright rocks! Those little kids and china can really make things cheaply.

I've see this problem MANY times with the 440t4/4t60e - it's the front pump in the transmission making noise - it's a common problem and was later fixed with the updates for the newer/rebuilt transmissions. Try changing the fluid it may help.
