I HAVE A '92 CUTTLASS SUPREME 3.1. EVERYONCE IN A WHILE WHEN I START MY CAR IN THE MORNING I SHIFT MY TRANY INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE AND IT TAKE ABOUT 5 SECONDS TO ENGAGE. ALSO EVERYONCE IN A WHILE WHEN STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN ENGINE JUST REVS. LIKE IT'S IN NEUTRAL THEN TRANY DROPS IN GEAR. HAS ANYONE HAD THIS PROBLEM? DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT IT COULD BE? THANKS

FOR THE RESPONSES.

Wow... First of all, lay off the caps lock. All it will do is piss people off.

Sounds like it could be a lack of hydraulic pressure and then a slow build up. I would first, a good precaution, have the pan dropped and have the filter replaced. If its restricting flow, this could cause the late engagement.

If its not that then your looking into pump or valve body problems, and that would prolly be a full rebuild.

Should be right around $2000 for a rebuild. If it is a 4T60E you may be able to buy one for a good deal used and just stick in a filter and gasket. You can do this all for $500 or less if you get lucky.

I had the same exact problem. I would stop at a stop sign and come to a stop, step on the gas and it would rev... then when the rpms got to about 2500 it would grab and go. What I believe it is, is something is gummed up inside the tranny. Buy a bottle of mechanic in a bottle. Make sure you get the detergent (lucas will not help here). dump it into the tranny and let it idle for about 20 minutes. Take it for a drive and slowly but surly the problem will go away. after 1000 miles get the fluid and filter changed because you will have a buildup of sludge in the filter. I had a ton of jack ass mechanics tell me "oh its your torque convert", "you need a rebuild". They are all a bunch of stupid penis pumps. Get the detergent in there and I bet you will be just fine. I am now over 2 years since it happend and it shifts like a champ.

It sounds like the hydraulic pump in the trans is starting to go out ... or that you've got a seal leaking somewhere inside the transmission ... these symptoms along with harsh shifting are both signs that the transmission is nearly done. Sometimes it can be a buildup of sludge in the transmission, and a detergent can fix it but that is almost never the case, and in most cases can actually cause more harm then good.
