Robby1870 Posted August 28, 2005 Report Posted August 28, 2005 Havent had A/C since I got this car over a year ago. There wasnt enough stuff in the system for the compressor to kick on, so I "retrofitted" the system by just dumping 2lbs of R134a and oil into to. A/C blows cold now. I know this isnt the "correct" procedure, but I really dont care about the old stuff mixing with the new stuff. Ive got numerous compressors laying around. Main thing is the A/C works now. Plus, I got new front rotors and pads today and bleeded the front calipers......and the car stops now! Quote
gp90se Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 ohhhhh ahhhh as long as ya know the seals wont last, enjoy the ac while it does Quote
GP1138 Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Hooray for shitty gas mileage.. and I hope your "retrofit" doesn't cause any problems. Quote
MoTox8410 Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 whats the probelm with mixing r-12 with r-134a?? Quote
Robby1870 Posted August 29, 2005 Author Report Posted August 29, 2005 Hooray for shitty gas mileage.. and I hope your "retrofit" doesn't cause any problems. I dont use the A/C except on the highway anyway. Im happy to have it as long as it lasts, if it doesnt, oh well. I told myself I'd try once and as cheaply as possible. So, if it doesnt work, then it doesnt, I really dont care. Im more excited my car stops now, lol Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 whats the probelm with mixing r-12 with r-134a?? Mixing the oils in the two can kill the compressor and eat the seals. Quote
jeremy Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Hooray for shitty gas mileage.. a tad worse gas mileage is well worth it to have cold air Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 Mixing the oils in the two can kill the compressor and eat the seals. Ester oil is compatible with both. Just don't use PAG. Quote
MoTox8410 Posted August 29, 2005 Report Posted August 29, 2005 ive done 3 cars with no problems and for one its been about 3 years and still ice cold Quote

Yeah, the cans of R134a I put in had ester oil in them. I know a couple of guys that have done basically what I did they havent had any problems. Quote
