Well, first gear is the same as the W 2.8/3.1 and 91 Quad HO 282.

Second is real close to the second in 92-94 Quads and W41 cars (2.05 vs 2.04).

Third gear, is real close to the 1.38 all 282s had.

Forth gear, seems to be from the 2.8/3.1 J and L cars.

Fifth gear, seems to be a new gear. .72 and .81 used to be common.

Sixth gear, is ultra long at .62.

The FDR is also new.

Other than a pretty big 1-2....it seems like a pretty decent gearset. Even though 5th gear will be useless for acceleration unless you are making BIG power. Personally, I would stick with a 282....its rebuildable and replaceable.

I still think GTPs are overpriced.....you can buy a LT1/6 speed Camaro for the same price. Granted its older, but its a better car.

yeah, there are still only 4 "usable" gears. Making 4th a 1:1 and 5th a ~.88:1 and 6th a ~.75 would have been better, IMO. But, it is still a nice gear box and from reading that clubGP thread will open many doors for 2 gen owners

As I'm looking to buy a G6 GTP in the spring with that tranny, it's very interesting that this finally came up. I'm actually surprised they were able to obtain the unit considering that G6 GTP's with that tranny are just starting to make their way to the lots. In a 25mile radius of me, there are only 3 of them with a mtx between 7 dealerships. I'm going to look at one any maybe test drive one today or maybe next week. If I do, I'll make sure to let you guys know of my first impressions of the tranny.

I'm suprised that they think it'd be just as easy to attach it to a 90* L36 or L67 as the 3100 L82 engine. I'd think it'd be easier to attach to the 3.1 and the L82 because they're 60* engines with different housings than the 90*. The 3.9 that the tranny is paired to is a 60* V6, not a 90*. I'm not a huge technical guy, so I'll let the more knowledgeable people argue about it. lol

Based on the #'s above, isn't there a way to determine the speed at which the shift would take place?

all V6 motors have the same bell housing along with the northstar motor. in saying this i have been looking into this for a while. I am the actually getting the trans in my hands. ihave a L36 bolted to a 282 and had no problems with the cltuch cable or anything else

Those tires (on the GTP's) are just as tall (even a little taller) as the ones on most W-Body's (225/60R16).

Combine that with the long FDR and the 6K rpm redline that all 60 deg. V6's seem to have and I think you'll find that these gears wind out quite a long way.

Lets see:

~6.82ft circumference for a set of 225/50R18's.

1st gear is a 13.38:1 overall ratio.................that's 10,359rpm at 60mph..............or just a nose under 35mph at the 6K rpm redline.

Note: If anybody doesn't follow my math, I can explain it.......but until then, just suffice to say that it's a LOT of typing

Going off of that...........

1st 35mph

2nd 65mph

3rd 100mph

4th 138mph

5th 172mph

6th a LOT

I should point out though, that most GM V6's make peak power at ~5K rpm (although NOT the 3.9 in the G6 GTP), that peak power in 5th is very reachable...............5K rpm is 143-144ish mph.

Also......bear in mind that the numbers above are approximations (within 1-2% though)..................until I see exactly what tire and redline the G6 GTP has, this ought to do though.

BTW..........since current W's have a similar overall tire diameter as the G6, the numbers above should be close.
