NaiChemsya Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 Are there any ratchet shifters for the stock Lumina Z34 auto trans? Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 a ratchet type shifter (B&M comes to mind) wouldn't do a whole lot for the Z34's as they've got the "E" style transmission, meaning the computer controls the shifts, I started working on a project that would allow you to control your own shifts VIA pushbutton with some type of indicator on the dash, but devolepment process stopped as soon as I ran outta money (I got the wiring diagrams and that was about it) --Dave. gp90se Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 B&M doesnt make a linkage that would connect to a GM FWD tranny, you've have 2 mock up your own mounts Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted August 25, 2005 Report Posted August 25, 2005 I knew that they don't make one for the FWD GM trani's... I was just thinkin' they make ratchet shifters. --Dave. Quote
bluegp Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 Are there any ratchet shifters for the stock Lumina Z34 auto trans? I don't believe so. You may be able to modify one to work. You'd have to make sure the shift cable will travel the correct distance for each position (it will be different from the RWD applications). This may involve a custom detent plate and or a different cable mounting point. Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 the "E" style transmission, meaning the computer controls the shifts... --Dave. a ratchet shifter won't do anything for you, you're best bet is to make some type of device to interrupt the signal from the computer to the trans and force the shifts when YOU want them to happen, that is short of not making your own valve-body.. --Dave. THe_DeTAiL3R Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 this is why "tap shift" is becoming popular for automatics.. Quote
Cam'ron Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 yes but even the manumatics or whatever the hell theyre calling them will shift automatically if you increase rpm's too much in a lower gear Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 Actually, not all of them will do that, the LS (lincoln) will stay in gear until you shift it, even if it's bumping off the rev limiter. --Dave. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 yes but even the manumatics or whatever the hell theyre calling them will shift automatically if you increase rpm's too much in a lower gear That is why I think tap-shift, and all those BS "manumatic" is crap. I can get the same effect from shifting through 1-3 manually. Nothing beats a REAL manual transmission! Quote
Cam'ron Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 i am sure there are some exceptions to my experiences... i stand somewhat corrected i test drove a new Sebring LXI before i bought my monte and it did that.. kinda annoyed me. i like the idea of having the manual control if you want it but auto if you just want to drive and not worry about shifting. DaveFromColorado Posted August 27, 2005 Report Posted August 27, 2005 this is halfway inspiring me to bring new life to my little project of having a setup designed so you can select which gear you want using some type of F1 style paddle setup for the w-bodies ... time for an other trip to radio-shack for some processors, and project boxes. --Dave. NaiChemsya Posted September 17, 2005 Author Report Posted September 17, 2005 Well I have a 91 Z34. I sent e-mails to Hypertech and Jetchip about getting a chip to program the shiftpoints. I was told that my trans is not computer controlled. And the rest sounds like more work than it's worth. Geuss I just gotta shop for the 5 speed Z34 then. Quote

My mom's CL will bounce of the limiter as well if shifting it manually. However my uncle's newer TL is pretty much pointless because it will shift itself if if reaches a certain RPM Anyway, I think that paddle shifter project is kinda cool, sounds like ALOT of work though Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 Hypertech and Jetchip are both dumbasses - all the Z34's had the E-style computer controled transmissions, and you can change the shift points in the trans with them... Ask Ben (Vegeta, or SappySE can't remember which name on here) if he can make a chip for ya, he's got the expirence, and I've heard lots of good things about his chips. --Dave. Quote
mihela816 Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 On the 60-E's, the transmission is still vacuum controlled, only the shifting process is electronic. Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted September 17, 2005 Report Posted September 17, 2005 line pressure is vacuum controled, the rest of the trans is computer controlled. --Dave. Quote
