jaxXxn Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 OK! First off hi everyone this is the best forum for our W-bodys on the net that i have found so far! But I am freakin so stumped on this primary cooling fan thing, The motor on the fan went out on me about a month ago n i knew it, the rear bearing went out on it because it made the most awful noise for about week before crappin out. THEN i didnt replace it right away n i had the craziest thing happen to me one day last week, I had just came into town to run some errands n of course the temp would rise like crazy cuz the fan wasnt functioning n i was manually shifting to keep the rpms up to keep the temp down and the upper radiator hose (the one on the driver side of the car) freakin BLEW OFF the spout...the hose didnt break...the spout had cracked completely in 2 peices n came off...n i mean i didnt drive it as soon as i heard it blow i shut off my engine cuz i've cracked a couple heads in my time ;-) BUT! now that ive replaced the radiator AND the fan motor...i cant get the stupid thing to come on! at all! nothing! ive changed coolant temp sensor. low coolant sensor and the thermostat. i can hook the motor up to the battery n it works...now for the crazy part...when short a-b on the diagnostic connector to pull codes...only secondary fan comes on...run ac full blast till temp goes up to 240-250*, still only secondary fan...if i try to ground the relay like if i would put a manual switch on it...alll that happens is the relay clicks...just clicks...im stumped guys...i guess the only thing that would be left would be the computer...but i would like to check every other possiblilty before i replace that...again thanks alot guys n sorry for the long post... sonyman87 Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 put a volt memter on the primary fan socket when it reaches those temps.. that will give you a good idea if its the fan or the car not sending the right signal. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted August 20, 2005 Report Posted August 20, 2005 Umm.. how does keeping the RPMs up keep the engine cool? Quote
jaxXxn Posted August 23, 2005 Author Report Posted August 23, 2005 i know its not the fan...the fan works...(and as for keeping the car cool) the water pump is belt driven...therefore when u keep the rpms up the pump turns faster allowing it to flow more water...or at least i think.. Quote
Robby1870 Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 i know its not the fan...the fan works...(and as for keeping the car cool) the water pump is belt driven...therefore when u keep the rpms up the pump turns faster allowing it to flow more water...or at least i think.. While doing that you use more gas and turn the engine faster.....making more heat. Ever try running a car on a dyno? Where the engine is making the wheels go like 60mph, but the car isnt moving? There's a lot of convection that going that fast creates with the radiator. Quote
Crimson Fury Z Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 i know your pain, my primary motor burned up, replaced and now the secondary kicks on inplace of the primary(only when the gauge reaches 1/2). i got a 180 stat and the chip is set for 180. i figure its close to me having to get a manual switch for it. jaxXxn Posted August 23, 2005 Author Report Posted August 23, 2005 yaaa thats true too but i was driving while i was holding up the rpms...but ya i dunno...i have to get a new radiator for now...but BACK to my primary question...why wont the primary fan kick on? im way baffled...what else tells the fan to kick on? cuz i mean come on it wont even kick on on diagnostic mode or when i ground the relay at all...nothing...im stumped guys! n im at college right now with NO CAR n i need a car cuz i need to get me a job asap...
